Vale Steve Edmonds
It is with sincere regret that we advise that Steve Edmonds passed away on Wednesday 19 August after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 72. As a junior cricketer, Steve accumulated an outstanding record as a pace bowler for Sutherland, taking 234 wickets in 81 matches between 1966-67 and 1970-71, when he stopped playing cricket to concentrate on his rugby league career with Cronulla-Sutherland.
In 1966-67, he took 6-28 in “B” Shires (6th Grade) vs Canterbury at Tonkin Oval, at the age of 13 years 309 days – still the youngest player to take five wickets in an innings for the Club. In 1967-68, he took 69 wickets at an average of 13.58 in 23 matches in 4ths, “A” Shires, “B” Shires and AW Green Shield – a total that stood as the club record for most wickets in all grades in one season until Anthony Hale’s all-conquering season in 1986-87, when he took 105 wickets. Steve backed that effort up in 1969-70 with 60 wickets at 12.85 in 20 matches in 3rds, 4ths, 5ths & P-G Shield. He dominated in 3rd Grade in 1969-70 & 1970-71, taking 65 wickets at 12.20 in 20 matches and played one match in 2nd Grade in his last season.
Steve is best known for playing 113 first grade matches for Cronulla-Sutherland between 1972 and 1981, mostly as a winger, including the 1978 grand final and grand final replay against Manly-Warringah.
We extend our sincere condolences to Steve's family. His funeral will be held at the South Chapel of Woronora Crematorium on Thursday 3 September at 11am.
