Today was the perfect winter’s Saturday. Even though it never made double figures – at least not until everyone had packed up and gone home – it was bright and still and sunny and there were those who had put on a few layers too many who regretted that extra greatcoat by the end of the five thousand metres.
All the world decided that Mount Ainslie was the place to be. At least 299 did: 282 finishers and 17 volunteers.
Maybe it was the cake: today’s photographer, Danielle, had a significant life event to celebrate.
Maybe it was the tutus: today was the 22nd of the month. 22. Two two. Tutu.
Subtle and sophisticated? No. Fun? Yes!
Fun was had. Great times were recorded. Thirty-nine also celebrated with a Personal Best. Well done!
Joy and jubilation all round, especially if you check out Danielle’s delightful video of an encounter on the trail. Well-behaved barkrunners, children giving their all, and gentlefolk of all ages skipping merrily along.
For the eleven newcomers to parkrun, a grand welcome. Trust us, it’s not always like this: sometimes it’s even better!
Two fresh volunteers today: Karyn and Ian, lined up scanning tokens. Six milestoners: Dan, Felicity, Zalynn, and Cathy notching up a purple 25, with Joshua and Sue joining the red fifty club.
Scott on 595 parkruns, Ada on 403, both demonstrating that parkrun is a lifetime pleasure.
First finishers today were Tim on 18:55 with First Lady Emily on 19:54. Emily also hit an age grade percent of 75.13%, with Tim scoring 75.65%.
All this was managed, free of charge, by today’s team of volunteers, led by Kate: Tony, Jenni, Peter, Rebecca, Liam, Sandeep, Natasia, Susie, Danielle, Sam, Ian, Jillian, Karyn, Bruce, Arthur , and Alasdair.
Thank you, all!
As noted, visitors came from around the city, nation, and globe: Sydney, Brisbane, New Zealand, Oxford, South Coast, Melbourne, Orange, North Coast, Wagga Wagga, Cheltenham, Sunshine Coast, Wodonga, Blue Mountains, Geelong, Mudgee, and Bendigo.
Parking has become more abundant with the official opening of the Campbell High School upper carpark on Treloar Crescent. There are plentiful spaces at the Australian War Memorial, which has the added advantage of boasting not just toilets, but a cafe for all your post-parkrun needs.
Remember to keep dogs on a handheld leash – and NOT a waist harness – with children within easy reach of their responsible adult.
Or vice versa, considering the times being posted by some junior parkrunners.
Our course is a rough fire trail, with rocks, puddles, ridges, and undulations of all sorts. Please take care. Wear your grippiest footwear. We have three first aid kits on course – and a defibrillator – but we’d rather not have to use them.
As winter turns into spring, the weather warms and the flowers come out; please also watch out for wildlife. Kangaroos are plentiful, especially if you turn up early, but we also have smaller creatures and plenty of birds.
Our volunteer roster is looking pretty good for the next couple of weeks, but we can always find space for willing hands. Contact us to reserve your hi-viz vest.
Thank you, once more, parkrunners, parkwalkers, parkstrollers, barkrunners and volunteers. It’s five kilometres of fun, and everybody is welcome. Keep smiling, and we’ll be here for you next week, when Spring will be knocking on the door.
