It’s clear that North Queenslanders thrive in sport - from our grassroots clubs, volunteers and coaches, to the incredible athletes competing at the highest level. 💙

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate and celebrate the people who make sport in our region so special.

We can’t wait to celebrate our finalists and announce the winners at the 36th North Queensland Sports Awards, happening 17 October in Cairns.

And just like that Singapore IVF Va'a World Sprint Championships 2026 is over. Ten days of dynamic, intense, exhilarating and unforgiving sprint racing. Hekili turned up every day ready to race against the best and to do our best.

Our incredible M50 women showed far North Queensland can not only compete at this level but dominate after an unbeaten run in both 1000m turns and 500m sprint events. But it’s not winning but how we win that matters most. Hekili trained and prepared for this campaign as an extended squad with paddlers joining us from Mission Beach, Port Douglas, Cairns Beaches, Mooloolaba, Noosa, Burrum Heads, Sydney and Perth. Our strength was our unity. And it showed on and off the water.

For 10 days we paddled our hearts out, cheered madly, helped out whenever we were asked and often when we weren’t and carried the ‘mana’ of our beautiful sport and club. Thank you to each and every one of you for making the past fortnight so special.

Heartfelt thanks to AOCRA and in particular, to CC and Scotty for being there from daylight to dusk, in the blistering heat to support our Aussie contingent. Our sport exists only because of volunteers and while it’s easy to criticise what’s not there, we must never forget the care and passion of those who are.

To our coaches and committee - here and at home - thank you for all that you do. We are blessed to have the passion, energy, expertise and resources to participate at this level.

Take a bow, Hekili. We know what we have is special — and now the rest of the world does, too! 💛🤗👏🏼🇦🇺

A golden day at Marina Bay as Day 8 of Singapore IVF Va'a World Sprint Championships 2026 delivered all the dramatic highs and lows we have come to expect from sprint racing, where crews can go from hero to zero in a fraction of a second.

Hekili members in Singapore will never forget the moment our M50 women’s crew learned it had won gold yesterday. After qualifying 2nd fastest, they lined up in the final alongside clubs from Hawaii and California who also dominated in the semis. Hekili jumped the start and powered to the front. What happened over the next 5:06:59 was a master class by ace steerer Kate with her Mission Beach dynamos Kathy and Clare up front, turning the Hydra on a dime 💫 Every turn bought Hekili out in front and powerhouses Emma, Sue and Charlie combined in the middle to desperately to hold off Team Cal and 59 Kai Ehitu, advancing at every stroke. In the end it was sheer determination to keep in front of the fast finishing Californians, to the extent no-one really knew the result until it was confirmed minutes later. And, well, you have seen the scenes of sheer joy, triumph (relief) and gratitude from this champion crew who came together to have a crack - and will be leaving Singapore as the best in the world 🥇🙌🏼🌎

But NOT yet… because the job’s not done. Hekili will be back in force today for Day 9 where the action will be fast and furious… straight 500s. Bang bang, Hekili. Let’s go get ‘em!!!
