The Batavia collection

Today's nugget drop comes from the historic Batavia Goldfield, deep in Queensland's rugged Cape York Peninsula.

Gold was discovered here in the late 1880s, sparking a rush that drew hopeful miners into one of Australia's most remote and unforgiving regions. While Batavia never reached the fame of Palmer or Hodgkinson, it earned a reputation for producing beautiful, high-quality alluvial gold.

The field is also home to the famous Kitty Pluto reef, one of Cape York's richest hard rock gold discoveries, which produced spectacular grades and secured Batavia's place in Queensland's gold mining history.

More than 130 years later, modern prospectors are still uncovering these natural treasures from the same historic goldfield.
