The Byron Bay Malibu Club is one of the oldest longboard clubs in Australia. We meet every 2nd Sunday of the month for a surf round at Wategos beach.

The Mal club was founded in 1980 and since then has ran the Byron Bay Malibu classic. This event is one of the only remaining single fin comps in Australia and is the longest running. It sees longboarders from all Over Australia coming to compete. The comp is run by volunteers from the club and all the money raised goes to local charities.

Get on down and grab a bargain

On Sunday 12th July there will be a paddle out at Wategos to celebrate the life of Ron Hughes. Ron was a much loved member of the Byron Bay Malibu Club. For many years he worked as the club secretary and ensured the smooth running of the club and in particular the Malibu Classic. Ron was very enthusiastic about the Old Mal division and it would be a nice tribute if surfers could bring their ‘Old Mal’ boards along. Proceedings will commence at 11am following the Club Round. We will provide a BBQ and an opportunity to catch up with Pam and the Hughes family.

We had a low key presentation during the week to donate the money we raised from the Malibu Classic. The Shift Project, Byron YAC, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Marine Rescue and last but not least the NSW Far North Coast Branch of the Disabled Surfer’s Association all received much needed funding. The common theme from these organisations was the importance of donations in order to assist with the services they provide. Once again the Byron Bay Malibu Club would like to thank the generous support from our sponsors and also all the longboarders who entered and made the Classic not only a fun event but a very worthwhile one. A shout out to the Committee who worked hard behind the scenes to get it all up and running. We will do it all again next year 🏄‍♀️🏄‍♂️

Once again Wategos turned on a bit of winter sparkle. It was a casual attire round without rashies. Great to see a few new members and of course the rock steady crew. More happy snaps during the week.
