Having finally finished a mat Pilates certification, I've been pondering how it differs from yoga and why. By chance a lovely student in class today asked me that very question. So here goes....

Pilates and yoga share some common elements—such as body awareness, breathing, posture, and mindful movement—but they were developed for different purposes and therefore have different principles.

Yoga originated in ancient India and is a holistic practice that integrates the body, mind, and spirit. Traditional yoga principles often include:

- Breath awareness (Pranayama)
- Mindfulness and meditation
- Balance and harmony
- Non-judgement and self-awareness
- Flexibility and mobility

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century as a system of physical conditioning and rehabilitation. The core principles are generally:

- Breathing
- Concentration
- Control
- Centering (core)
- Precision
- Flow

A simple way to explain it is:
Yoga asks, "How can I connect more deeply with myself and my body?"
Pilates asks, "How can I move more efficiently and strengthen my body?"

The practices complement each other beautifully. Yoga can enhance flexibility, body awareness, breath control, and nervous system regulation, while Pilates develops core strength, stability, postural alignment, and movement precision. Together they create a balanced mind-body approach to health and wellbeing.

Another incredible weekend of learning completed! 🙌

I've just finished a weekend of Pilates Reformer training, further expanding my knowledge of movement, strength, mobility, and body awareness.

What I love most is how beautifully Pilates and yoga complement one another. While yoga encourages mindfulness, breath awareness, flexibility, and the connection between mind and body, Reformer Pilates adds a unique focus on strength, stability, alignment, and functional movement.

Together, they create a powerful combination for improving overall fitness, enhancing movement quality, preventing injury, and developing a deeper understanding of how our bodies move and perform.

As both a teacher and lifelong student, I'm passionate about continuing my education so I can bring the very best knowledge and experience to my clients and classes.
Here's to never stopping learning, growing, and moving. 💛

I’m honoured to be presenting at this year’s MAA conference on the importance of embracing a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, and how integrating these core pillars - including yoga and movement - can benefit both practitioners and the clients they serve.
