Do you snack?
Who needs ideas for healthier choices?
Do you make time to eat these snacks?

So healthier choices for snacks within our day is a hard one! We live such busy lives that it is challenging to get our meals in! It is important though they do take the time to sit and enjoy our food. BUT sometimes we do need that go to food before we get the chance to sit down with our main meals. Food that you can just shove in the mouth, rather than need to prepare.

So let’s look at some choices that we can use for that go to food!

• Fruit – a bundle of fibre with the natural sugars for that pickup required

• Yoghurt – a small package of good quality protein and fats to support energy production

• Boiled eggs – another small package of good quality protein and fats

• Small handful of nuts – choose the nuts you prefer

• Small piece of dark chocolate – if you need that pickup in the arvo!

And now here is some homemade ideas!

• Oat bars

• Veggie fritters

• Seed crackers

• Peanut butter cups

• Piece of lean chicken

Let us know your ideas so we can all share

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic condition characterised by increased blood glucose levels, alongside other symptomology. It is a long term and persistent condition that occurs due to the body’s inability to process and regulate blood glucose due to the over secretion of insulin. This over secretion leads to Insulin Resistance, which is a decline in sensitivity for insulin to do its job of regulating glucose within the blood.

Type 1 Diabetes

This condition is a autoimmune disease due to insulin insufficiency. This is caused by a cell destruction in the pancreas, due to the autoimmune mechanism of the body.

Type 2 Diabetes

A metabolic disorder caused by a combination of deficient insulin secretion and inability of tissues to properly respond to insulin.

Gestational Diabetes

A condition that occurs in pregnant females who have elevated blood sugar levels. This is triggered by factors such as obesity, family history of diabetes and maternal age.

Hypermobility is a generic umbrella term that refers to the ability of some or all of a person’s joints to move beyond the normal range of motion due to increased elasticity of the ligaments that are supposed to stabilise the joints.

Symptoms of hypermobility may increase the frequency of:

• Joint dislocation and subluxations (partial or incomplete dislocations) especially common in shoulders, knees and ankles.
• Higher incidence of sprains and strains (ligament/tendon damage) due to overstretching.
• Persistent pain in muscles and joints, often labelled as "growing pains" in children, which can become chronic (e.g., fibromyalgia).
• Repeated injuries and chronic instability can lead to joint degeneration and osteoarthritis at a younger age.
• Poor proprioception appearing clumsy, poor fine motor skills (messy handwriting)
• Anxiety and depression
• Chronic fatigue
• Stomach and digestive problems (reflux, irritable bowel, food intolerances or allergies)
• Women may notice pelvic floor symptoms especially after childbirth

If you have identified any of the above symptoms, a quick check on “The Beighton score” is a common screening tool for hypermobility. It may be worthwhile talking to physiotherapist who is able to determine joint instability and assessing muscle control related for a diagnosis of other compilations such as Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD), Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).
A specialised exercise prescription may be required to reduce the risk of injury with a physiotherapist or an exercise physiologist to firstly to manage pain, gain strength and muscular control whilst reducing the risk of injury.

Living with hypermobility can be successfully managed with the right balance of strength, movement awareness and lifestyle adjustments. Learning to recognise early signs of fatigue or instability allows you to modify activities before causing or worsening of pain symptoms. Learning strategies can help assist with staying active, protecting your joints and maintaining independence.
