The Highlands foundation were invited as guest speaker to the Rotary Club of Casterton to share our cause to support maternal and child health in Papua New Guinea. We look forward to partnering with this community to progress our projects. Thank you to Belinda Henkel President and her committee for their warm welcome and hospitality.

And it’s full! Container to Tari-Hela Province is filled to the brim with essential health care items as well as close to 800 Mother and Baby Packs to support maternal and child health. Now begins the logistics of getting the container on the sea which can be the most challenging aspect of the operations. However our Vice President Kylie Podolakin in Melbourne and Dr Tana Kiak in Hela province PNG will work together to see the container delivered and meet the health care needs of remote communities.
A huge THANK YOU to all our volunteers who attended our packing day on Saturday with new volunteers joining our vision. We will keep you posted regarding the Tari container project and how it will make a difference.

From Melbourne to Remote areas of Papua New Guinea. Together we make it happen. The generous hearts of our Australian volunteers and the strength and resilience of health workers in East Sepik. The process is lengthy and many challenges are faced, but when our aid and support gets to those who need it the most, our hearts are filled with gratitude knowing we have made a positive difference to mothers, babies and families in poorly resourced areas. We are thankful that the recipients of our projects are good stewards of the selfless work we all do. A shout out to Sister Linda Tano from East Sepik Provincial Health Authority and her team for working together to ensure all the necessary contents of the container get to where they are most needed.

-Cloth nappies made from flannel or terry toweling, reusable nappy covers,
-Baby wraps (1m sq. for sewing)
-Baby booties.
Please note that we cannot accept other baby clothing at this time due to storage limitations.

For Women:
-T-shirts/polo tops (sizes 14/16/18) excluding white
-Drawstring skirts (below the knee) or fabric for sewing,
-New underwear (sizes 14/16/18 full brief),
-Gifts for women (beads, large-toothed comb, small purse, compact mirror, hair clips),
-Bath towels,
-face washers,
-sanitary pads.

Yet Papua New Guinea (PNG) has the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the Pacific region. It accounts for the majority of child deaths in the area. The maternal mortality ratio is roughly 171 per 100,000 live births, while some studies place the overall Oceania region, heavily weighted by PNG, at 494 per 100,000.

Key Details on Maternal and Infant Health in PNG:
Maternal Risk: A woman in PNG has a 1 in 120 lifetime risk of dying in childbirth.
Causes: High rates are driven by preventable conditions like post-partum hemorrhage, sepsis, and eclampsia.
Challenges: Contributing factors include limited antenatal care, lack of skilled birth attendants, long distances to health facilities, and limited medical resources.
Infant Mortality: PNG faces significant challenges with neonatal mortality, with early neonatal mortality (within 7 days) at approximately 14 per 1000 live births.
