After a full week of soaking up Country and knowledge from our hosts at BPAC (Bunya People’s Aboriginal Corporation) our junior rangers return from the mountains invigorated with the experience of challenging team work and looking after country together.
After an initial welcome to country we spent a full day with Uncle Shannon Bauwens and visited various significant areas and learned about people and Country and how ancestors cared for Country and how we can continue these important practises today.
Time was spent around the fire in the evening reflecting upon the day’s events and preparing our minds and bodies for the next 2 days of very physical work, led by Leeton Lee and Mick Smith in removing invasive lantana and clearing tracks for access for crews to perform future cultural burns, as part of ongoing rehabilitation works.
After a vigorous hike to some wonderful vantage points, the team returned back to the ranger station for a disappointing loss to NSW in the State of Origin. Some in our crew were bit so disappointed as they were NSW supporters 👎🏽
The attitude and commitment of the young people who attended was very impressive and it gave hope to us older ones that Country is in good hands 🖤💛❤️

COONEANA OLIVE — IPSWICH’S RAREST PLANT
The Notelaea ipsviciensis exist nowhere else on Earth.
Fewer than 20 plants have ever been recorded in the wild and are confined to a small pocket between Dinmore, Ebbw Vale and New Chum.
First identified in 1976 near the former Cooneana Homestead, the original population was destroyed before it could be properly studied. It was later rediscovered in the 1980s.
Small. Unassuming. Easy to miss.
Its survival now depends on active conservation, led by Ipswich City Council and the Queensland Department of Environment and Science.
Not available for sale. Not replaceable.
In a city of half a million people, fewer than 20 remain.
Still here, just.
