A string of tricks is not choreography.

A dancer can turn, leap, tilt, flip, and execute every difficult skill in the book. But when those skills are simply placed one after another to the music, we may be watching impressive movement without experiencing a work of art.

Choreography should have something to say.

It should carry an emotion, explore an idea, tell a story, or reveal something personal. It should make the audience feel something they were not feeling before the music began.

Technique gives dancers the ability to perform movement well. Tricks can add excitement and difficulty. But they should serve the choreography, not become the choreography.

The pieces we remember are not always the ones with the most tricks. We remember originality. Honesty. Expression. We remember the work that made us stop, think, laugh, ache, or see something differently.

That is artistry.

Before adding another trick, ask:

What am I trying to say?
Why does this movement belong here?
What do I want the audience to feel?

A trick may earn applause for a moment.

True choreography stays with us long after the dancer leaves the stage.

Week 1 went by so fast, but it’s time to really get into our prep for end of year now that most of the songs have been chosen … looking forward to an exciting semester with everyone 🤍🖤

WEDNESDAY DANCERS AND FAMILIES….. for the first 7 weeks there will be a function in the church waiting area so we will be using the small foyer to access our studios. Please go to the right and around the corner to the big double glass doors (you will see our TNT sign at the corner) 🤍🖤
