Each year there is a friendly bet between our Salisbury Dojo and Botany Dojo for state of origin- the losing sensei must wear the coloured belt of the winning state. Due to some serious cheating, NSW won and Cheyne Sensei graciously toured iconic Qld spots just to take a photo in a dirty blue belt..

These photos from 9 years ago made me stop and think about how long our journey with the Mitani family has been.
Our relationship with Mitani Kazuya Sensei and the Mitani family began back in 2001, and it has had a major influence on the direction of our karate ever since.
Through Mitani Sensei, we were introduced more deeply to the teachings, research, kata, principles and ideas of Kinjo Hiroshi Sensei, one of the great researchers and preservers of old Okinawan karate.
Kinjo Sensei’s karate was not just about copying kata movements or performing nice-looking technique. It was about understanding what karate was originally for: timing, distance, seizing, striking, controlling, throwing, makiwara, partner training, kata principles, and the deeper study behind the movements.
That way of thinking has shaped us deeply.
At the same time, we have never wanted to simply become a museum.
We still practise and preserve the karate passed on through Mitani Sensei and his family. We still value the connection to Kinjo Hiroshi Sensei and the older Shuri-te line. We still train the kata, ideas and principles that have been shared with us.
But over time, we have also grown into our own karate.
Koshinkan Karate and our Ryukyu Kobudo have developed through years of training, teaching, research, travel, mistakes, correction, discussion and experience on the dojo floor. We respect the past, but we also believe karate has to keep living.
In September, we will be returning to Japan to train again with the Mitani family, spend time together, and continue that relationship that has now lasted more than 20 years.
For us, this is what tradition really means.

Hi guys,
From the start of the Term 2 school holidays, Monday June 29, we will be making a small change to the timetable.
After listening to feedback from parents, our Little Ninjas class will now start at 4:00pm. The dojo will open from 3:30pm, so families do not need to rush straight from school to get changed and ready for class.
We are also moving the High School class on Monday and Wednesday to 5:30pm. A number of parents mentioned that the later finish time was a bit too late for some of the younger high school students, so this change should make things easier for families.
These are only slight changes, but we believe they will make the timetable work better for both students and parents.
All other classes remain the same.
Thank you again for your feedback. We always try to listen and make adjustments where possible.
Attached is the kids timetable.
