Good luck to all our Tigers taking the field this weekend and into next week! 🐯💛🖤

We still have 17 Easts teams alive in finals, with 13 teams taking the field across Grand Finals, Bronze Medal Matches and Preliminary Finals over the coming days.

A special mention to our BHL2 Men, PL2 Women, PL3 Women and PL4 Women, who have earned the week off and will take their place in next weekend’s Grand Finals.

Get out to the fields, wear your yellow and black, and help cheer our Tigers on. Your support makes all the difference!

DIV 4 LADIES ALSO TAKE THE “EXCITING” ROUTE

Last weekend, our Div 4 Ladies followed our Div 2 and Div 3 Ladies into a Qualifying Semi-Final battle against Uni of Queensland.

The Div 2 game was close.

The Div 3 game was closer.

Surely the Div 4 game wouldn’t follow the same script?

Or would it?

Surely Easts supporters couldn’t be made to endure another tense battle in the fading winter light.

Even the photographer didn’t hang around until the end. He headed north to Redcliffe.

His loss—because the Div 4 Ladies put on quite a show.

This time, UQ were the Minor Premiers. 3 points behind, Kedron finished second, with Easts one point further back in third. Tough League.

The teams had met twice during the season: a 1–0 win to UQ and a 4–1 win to Easts.

So yes—another close game was very much on the cards.

This is an exciting little team, with a fine mix of experienced campaigners and young, fast, skilful players.

You know the script!

Yet another dastardly Penalty Shootout.

It was time for some brave ladies to step forward and make the difference.

Goalkeeper Charlotte was magnificent, repelling three UQ attempts.

Tabatha converted our second.

Ruby converted our third.

But we needed one more.

Just one more.

Up stepped our own Argentine Lioness, Victoria Abba.

With Las Leonas newly crowned world champions—and victory quite literally in her name—she coolly converted Easts’ fifth and final shootout to send the Tiger camp into delirium.

DIV 3 LADIES TAKE THE “EXCITING” ROUTE — THE ONE KIRSTIN COULDN’T WATCH

Last weekend, our Div 3 Ladies followed the Div 2 Ladies’ lead by taking on Uni of Queensland in their Qualifying Semi-Final.

Easts finished as Minor Premiers, with UQ just two points behind in second place.

The teams had met twice during the season for one win apiece, so an easy afternoon was never on the menu.

Nil-all at half-time only added to the tension.

Just after the break, UQ struck first with a nicely taken goal.

The Tiges lifted, applied the pressure and fought to keep themselves in the contest.

Then, in the 57th minute, Greta took matters into her own hands and slammed home a tomahawk to keep us alive.

Both sides tried valiantly—but in vain—to find the winner.

Full-time: 1–1

By now, you know the script.

Off we went to that dastardly Penalty Shootout.

Up first were Chloe, who was clinical, and Greta, our gladiatrix.

Both scored. Their job was Dunne.

That would be the sum total of our successful shootouts: two.

Would two be enough?

Now goalkeeper Angelina Romeo stepped slowly—but assuredly—out of the shadows.

Could Angelina repel three to keep us alive?

Could Angelina repel four to win it for us?

Could Kirstin even remain standing and watch our Tiger gladiatrices do battle?

Yes. Yes. And No.

Angelina dove—and dived! She slid, shimmied, jumped, crawled and even saved one with her head.

Angelina repelled four of the five.

Kirstin quietly studied the stitching of the turf.

Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention:

We won the shootout 2–1.

The Div 3 Ladies are off to the Grand Final in 2 weeks.

Our Metro League 2 Ladies are set for the biggest game of the season as they take on South Brisbane Eagles in the Grand Final this Sunday!

MASTERS 1 LADIES MARCH STRAIGHT INTO THE GRAND FINAL

Last week, our Monday Masters 1 Ladies—the Minor Premiers—took on 2nd-placed Kedron in the Qualifying Semi-Final.

And what a close match it was.

Kedron threw everything at the Tiges, but the Easts defence—with Jane Gleeson guarding the goal—absorbed it all.

The Penalty Corner count tells the story:

Kedron 9 – Easts 4.

That was an awful lot of defensive-circle work.

But the difference came from one of our four PCs, with Kirsten slapping home the only goal of the match.

Then came a massive defensive effort as the Ladies held firm and kept the Kedron Wolves from the door.

Full-time: Easts 1 – Kedron 0.

The reward? Straight through to the Grand Final.

Kedron has since defeated Bulimba 3–0 in the Preliminary Final—so guess who’s coming back for another crack?

Yep. The Wolves.

MASTERS 2 LADIES BOW OUT AFTER TWO NAIL-BITERS

On 17 August, our Monday Masters 2 Ladies—who finished the season in an excellent 2nd place—took on 3rd-placed South West United in the Semi-Final 1.

It was a close night game, but the Ladies went down 0–1.

That gave them another chance last week, against 5th-placed Ascot Arana in the Elimination Semi Final.

And yet again, it was desperately close.

Neither side could find a goal before the final siren.

Full-time: 0–0.

You guessed it—a Penalty Shootout.

We scored two from our five attempts.

They scored three.

Shootout: 2–3.

Ouch. That is about as narrow—and as cruel—as finals hockey gets.

And so the season ends, but what a commendable season it was: 2nd place and just one shootout away from the Preliminary Final.

Bravo, Ladies. Enjoy the off-season—you’ve earned it. 🖤💛

MASTERS 4 LADIES BOW OUT WITH HEADS HELD HIGH

Our Monday Masters 4 Ladies have finished their season after a narrow Preliminary Final loss.

The Ladies finished an excellent 3rd and defeated 4th-placed Pine Hills 1–0 in last week’s Semi-Final. Photos are of this game.

It was a close contest, finally settled in the 52nd minute when Judy Day scored the evening’s only—and rather important—goal.

This week brought 2nd-placed Pine Rivers in the Preliminary Final.

From Pine Hills to Pine Rivers. Same general neighbourhood. Same tight sort of hockey.

Unfortunately, this one went the other way, with the Ladies going down 0–1.

And so their season comes to an end—one match short of the Grand Final, but after an excellent 3rd-place finish and two hard-fought Finals.

Well done, Ladies. A fine season.

DIV 2 LADIES STEP UP — THEY’RE OFF TO THE BIG ONE!

With our Div 1 Ladies bowing out, our Div 2 Ladies stepped into the breach to restore Tiger Pride.

And restore it they did.

Their last encounter with UQ finished 1–1, so another hard, close contest was no surprise — this time down by the river, with a place in the Grand Final at stake.

It was still scoreless at half-time.

Easts earned seven Penalty Corners to UQ’s five, but neither side could find the breakthrough.

Until, with just seven minutes remaining, Magic Maddie produced another of her Magnificent Penalty Corner Slaps.

Easts 1–0.

Then it was time to hang on as UQ unleashed the kitchen sink — and possibly several items from the university cafeteria.

The Tiger Defence held firm.

When the final siren sounded, it was the girls in black and gold doing the jumping.

MENS DIVISION 1 GET TO PLAY NEXT WEEK!

Our flagship side. The defending Premiers. This year’s Minor Premiers.

And now, the owners of a slightly more complicated route to the Grand Final.

On a cool Saturday night at Redcliffe, Easts and St Andrews produced a hard, close Qualifying Semi-Final.

Saints struck first, scoring from a penalty corner in the eighth minute.

The Tigers responded with two goals of their own to take a 2–1 lead into the break.

Then came the arm-wrestle.

Who would be the first to submit?

No-one.

Saints found the equaliser, while Easts began going long in search of the winner—too often turning over possession in the process.

At full-time: Easts 2 – St Andrews 2.

And so, to hockey’s exquisitely cruel method of separating two teams that could not be separated: the penalty shootout.

We scored two.

Saints scored one more.

Penalty Shootout: St Andrews 3 – Easts 2.

St Andrews earn the week off. We can’t complain—they played very well and deserved their reward.

The Tigers, meanwhile, get to play next week.

We now face Bulimba, who edged out Labrador in—what else?—another penalty shootout.

The straight road to the Grand Final is closed.

Time to take the green scenic route. 🐯🖤💛

MEN’S DIVISION 4 — ELIMINATION SEMI-FINAL

Easts 2 – Commercial 6

Ouch.

The Tigers finished 3rd, Commercial 4th — and only last week Easts had beaten them 5–0.

So victory wasn’t merely possible. It seemed decidedly gettable.

But Commercial clearly hadn’t read last week’s script.

Easts made an ordinary start and trailed 0–2 at half-time. Not ideal, but still very much in the hunt.

Then came the second half.

Bang. Bang.

Suddenly it was 0–4, the wheels had fallen off, and the Tigers were being asked to climb a very steep hill while Commercial kept making it steeper.

Easts fought back with two goals, but the damage had been done.

Full-time: Easts 2 – Commercial 6.

That’s sport for you. One week you win 5–0; seven days later, against the same opposition, you lose 2–6.

Same teams. Same game. Entirely different story.

Sport can be thrilling, cruel and gloriously unpredictable — a bit like life itself, only with more shin pads and fewer opportunities to blame the government.

A tough day, fellas, but one result doesn’t erase an excellent season.

Finishing 3rd in such a strong division was a mighty effort.
