✨ We are incredibly honoured and excited to welcome Gaylene Cummerfield Lawrence to the Queensland National Ballet (QNB) faculty! 🩰
An internationally acclaimed former Principal Artist with Birmingham Royal Ballet and Senior Artist with Australian Ballet, Gaylene brings a wealth of knowledge, artistry, and experience to our students. Throughout her distinguished career, she performed many of the world’s most iconic classical roles and established herself as one of the finest artists of her generation.
Many in the dance community will also know Gaylene alongside her husband, Matthew Lawrence, former Principal Artist with The Australian Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and Queensland Ballet, and former Ballet Master with Queensland Ballet. Together they have inspired generations of dancers both on stage and through their commitment to excellence in ballet.
Please join us in giving Gaylene the warmest welcome to the QNB family. We cannot wait for our students to learn from such an exceptional artist. 💙✨

We had to share our beautiful Sapphire! 💙🩰 This is what makes us so proud and exactly 1 year apart!
Just look at the change in her leg shape, placement, turnout, foot line, and overall understanding of her technique.
At Queensland National Ballet School, our Full-Time and Elite Performance Programs include technical and flexibility assessments each term. Students are photographed without a teacher physical correction, providing an honest benchmark of their own understanding, alignment, and progress.
These assessments allow both our teachers and students to celebrate how far they’ve come while identifying the next stage of their development.
Because true ballet technique isn’t built through quick fixes—it’s built through consistent training, expert guidance, and continual refinement.
The result is strong foundations, lasting muscle memory, and technique that stays with our dancers for years to come.
We couldn’t be prouder of Sapphire and the dedication she brings to every class. What a beautiful transformation! 💙✨
