This is exactly what I see with salon owners when we start changing the way they manage their money
At first, it can feel worse.
They’re seeing numbers they hadn’t really seen before.
They’re realising how much money is actually going out.
They’re making decisions they’ve been putting off.
And suddenly, the business can feel more stressful — even though they’re finally doing something about it.
But then something shifts.
The money starts making sense.
The decisions get easier.
The panic starts to disappear.
And eventually, they stop reacting to what’s happening in their bank account and start feeling in control of their money.
That uncomfortable stage in the middle?
It’s often part of getting better.

Success isn’t enough. We’ve redefined what it means for a salon to succeed. Raise the bar. The Salon In Control Standard™️
Everyone telling you you’ve made it but it doesn’t feel that way?
This week on the podcast we’re talking about why looking successful isn’t translating to feeling successful as a salon owner and what to do about it.

Bigger isn’t the goal.
A salon that rewards you is.
That’s a different definition of success.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the gap between how a salon looks and how it actually functions.
Because some of the salons that look the most successful from the outside are the ones where the owner is quietly carrying the most financial uncertainty.
And I don’t think that’s because they’re bad business owners.
I think we’ve simply been given a pretty poor definition of what success looks like.
We’re taught to chase the next revenue milestone, grow the team, fill the books, open the next location...
But rarely stop to ask:
Is the business actually working for the person who owns it?
That’s the question I’m becoming much more interested in.
Because I think we can set a much higher bar for salon success.
And I’m going to.
Share this with a salon owner who has a thriving business AND wants it to reward them.
What if we’ve been measuring salon success by the wrong things?
More revenue.
More clients.
More staff.
More growth.
Meanwhile a salon can be growing and the owner can still be:
😬 Unsure what they’re actually making
😬 Constantly stressing about cashflow
😬 Taking whatever is left over
😬 Worried about tax
😬 Making decisions without knowing what the numbers can support
So is it actually successful?
Revenue and growth don’t tell the whole story.
Success isn’t enough.
It’s time to redefine what it means for a salon to succeed.
And that’s exactly what I’m doing.
Have you ever started a new training regime? Maybe lifting weights or training for a marathon.
If you’re starting from 0 those first few weeks generally suck.
You’re doing the things, sticking to the plan…
And your body feels sore and you don’t see much improvement.
The biggest mistake is to say this isn’t working, we know change takes time and another few weeks on your training plan, you’ll start to notice a difference and feel better.
Changing the financial story of your salon is EXACTLY the same.
This is exactly what we’re exploring on the podcast this week. If you want to understand why to look for and how to start making change then this is for you.
Comment 118 and I’ll send the full episode to you.
Yes, I use a credit card in my business.
Not because I need it, I ran the business for years without one.
I have it because just like you I want to bank the points without wrecking my bank accounts.
I incorporated the credit card into my broader cashflow process so that the money is always there, ready to pay the balance in full when the bill comes through.
It gets paid on time every single month.
No interest paid.
Because if you start carrying a balance and paying interest then truly a credit card isn’t serving your business.
The hack is having the cashflow discipline to know the money is already there as you’re spending it.
Everyone does not need a credit card in their business… and sometimes it’s not worth it.
It’s the difference between having it work for you or being a slave to the bank.
I know which one I’d rather.
Let me know, is your credit card working for or against you in your business?

Your salon can be making good money and still leave you wondering where the hell it all went.
And when that happens, the instinct is usually:
“I need more clients.”
“I need more revenue.”
“I need to sell more.”
But if you don’t have a clear system for where the money coming in is supposed to go, more revenue doesn’t necessarily create more security.
It can just give you more money to lose track of.
The goal isn’t simply to make more.
It’s to know:
💎 what your salon needs
💎 what you can afford
💎 what needs to be set aside
💎 what you can pay yourself
💎 and what is actually available to spend
Because that’s when your money starts to feel different.
Not necessarily because there’s more of it.
Because you’re finally in control of it.
So, quick reality check:
Do you know exactly where the money from your last good month went?
Let me know below, yes or no.
The power of simple, transformational systems and habits is wild!
As a busy salon owner I know you don’t have a tonne of time and while the money side of things doesn’t feel like it comes naturally, it’s easy to over complicate it.
Sometimes it’s the simple things we’re missing that compound the list over time.

Counting down for the money to drop in…
Hoping it’s enough to cover the wages, super and last weeks product order.
If you’re finding that you are watching your bank account like a hawk, it’s your business communicating that something, somewhere in your business., something is off.
If the foundations were strong, the business was profitable and there was a cashflow process in place, there’d be enough to cover everything.
So instead of discounting it as a timing thing, something that will work itself out or something not to worry about, what if you asked instead.
