The Calgary Stampede in Canada has become synonymous with animal deaths and serious injuries. 2026 is no different unfortunately. We support Vancouver Humane Society’s efforts to stop the chuck wagon races and other rodeo events held at the Stampede.
It happened again. Another incident has left a horse seriously injured at the 2026 Calgary Stampede.
During a Calgary Stampede chuckwagon race on July 11, 2026, a horse suffered serious injuries after two teams collided while attempting to round the barrels.
Stampede representatives state “an initial exam revealed no fractures but the injury is considered serious”. The incident again highlights the inherent risks of the chuckwagon event—by far the deadliest animal event at the Calgary Stampede, with one death of a horse used in chuckwagon racing occurring for every 4.9 race days since the VHS began tracking fatalities at the Stampede in 1986.
Overall, an animal has died in the combined rodeo and chuckwagon races for every 3.6 event days at the Stampede.
The tragic deaths and injuries are part of a pattern of animal welfare concerns. Animals used in rodeo and chuckwagon events also experience fear, stress, and pain for public entertainment.
It does not have to be this way. The Calgary Stampede can celebrate community, heritage, and culture without putting animals in danger.
Use the link in the comments to urge government decision-makers and Stampede partners to work together to remove inhumane, dangerous, and deadly animal events from the Stampede program.
Want to do even more to help animals? Share this update with your friends, family, and community. The more people who know what is happening and speak up, the harder it becomes for decision-makers to ignore.

Go to AnimalKind’s original post for suggestions!
Murweh Shire Council in regional Queensland is asking their community to name the road leading to the Augathella Rodeo Grounds.
What would you name the road?

Thanks to AnimalKind for their long term advocacy for rodeo animals in Qld, often dubbed ‘the rodeo state’ of Australia.

Another screenshot from the junior event of Chute Do***ng held at the Caboolture Showgrounds last month.
It’s so sad that young people are encouraged/allowed to treat sentient creatures with such disrespect. Vets who viewed footage of this recent event said there was no doubt treatment like this would have caused the animals to be afraid.
TAKE ACTION: We encourage you to contact the venue, the Caboolture Showgrounds, to tell them of your concerns and ask them to not allow chute do***ng in the future: [email protected].

The kind of comment we often see on our page from rodeo fans. 🙄🤣

Meanwhile in New Zealand. 😢
The calf's femur was fractured during calf roping & the fleeing steer used for wrestling veered into a horse, causing a hind leg ligament injury sufficiently bad to require euthanasia.
The missing vet "summaries" (collated by rodeo supporters) for the 25/26 season are still not published 3 months after the season finished.

‘… Animals appearing distressed, being hit, kicked, prodded, and having their ears or tails twisted to force them to flee or buck.’ This is what has been documented in Canada. Rodeos harm animals wherever they take place. We applaud the Vancouver Humane Society for its strong advocacy against rodeos in Canada.
Animals used in rodeos continue to face serious welfare risks in B.C.
This season, troubling incidents have already been documented at the Cloverdale and Clinton rodeos. At Cloverdale, a horse and rider became tangled during a saddle bronc event and both were injured. At Clinton, footage showed visibly stressed animals and potentially illegal use of electric prods on animals, prompting the VHS to file cruelty complaints with the BC SPCA.
Sadly, these are not isolated incidents. Over the years, the VHS has documented repeated welfare concerns at B.C. rodeos, including animals appearing distressed, being hit, kicked, prodded, and having their ears or tails twisted to force them to flee or buck.
Despite these concerns, the B.C. government continues to provide public funding to events that include rodeo.
Animals deserve stronger protections. Taxpayer dollars should not support events where animals are put at risk for entertainment.
Please speak up for animals used in rodeos. Use the quick email tool to call on B.C.’s Ministry of Tourism to exclude rodeos from public grant programs and urge provincial decision-makers to strengthen protections for animals used in entertainment.

Animal Justice Party Queensland is continuing its terrific advocacy against the use of pyrotechnics at rodeo events held at big venues such as the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
TAKE ACTION: Please check out the original post to see how you can take action to help their campaign.
We are still awaiting a substantive response from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) regarding the use of motorcycle-mounted pyrotechnic effects at the Bikes & Bulls event in Brisbane.
While DPI has confirmed it is “looking into” whether these effects fall under fireworks legislation, key questions around licensing, enforcement, and how animal stress is assessed remain unanswered.
The Brisbane Entertainment Centre also recently hosted the PBR Origin Round II on 6 June, continuing the use of rodeo-style animal entertainment in a metropolitan venue.
This raises a serious question about whether lessons are being learned when concerns about animal welfare, noise, and pyrotechnic stressors remain unresolved.
We will continue pushing for transparency, accountability, and stronger protections for animals used in entertainment.
What you can do
📧 Contact the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and ask how pyrotechnic effects are being assessed and regulated in rodeo-style events involving animals, and how “undue disturbance” is determined in practice - [email protected]
📧 Contact the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and ask why it continues to host rodeo-style events involving animals while serious welfare concerns remain unresolved, including the use of noise and pyrotechnic effects around confined animals - [email protected]
🔁 Share this post to help increase public awareness and pressure for stronger animal welfare protections.
