Our season opening “Running of the first hoop” today. The hoop was run by both James Newbury, member for Brighton, and Robert Irlicht, councillor for Bleazby ward. Our thanks to both for getting things off and running.
Everyone then retreated under cover for a generous afternoon tea.

Croquet was played once at the Olympics, in 1900. All competitor were French. Three versions were played: one ball singles, two ball singles and doubles.
The photo shows a singles match in progress. Note the dapperness of the referee.

Congratulations to our club coaches Julie and Robin, and also to Wayne.
We humble members look forward to playing croquet much better under their tutelage.

On the weekend some of our members played in a regional AC competition at Elwood CC. The competition was played on half courts with strictly one hour games, which made it fun.
The time constraint caught me out when, trailing by one hoop, I roqueted a ball into a hoop and was in the process of placing my ball to take croquet and run the hoop, but the bell rang and game over, one down.
Besides the participants group photo, we see Robin in action, Bill on his way to winning the whole thing, Clive about to double tap and Marguerite making a nice roquet.
Thanks to Elwood’s Pam Herdman for the pics.
