A great weekend for Team Tizona at the 2026 Australian Intermediate Schools Championships!

Our fencers were out representing their schools over the weekend, with some fantastic results across the Men’s and Women’s Foil events.

Men’s Foil

🥇 Robert Zhou — Champion
🥉 Lucas Xing — Bronze
Eric Chen — 6th
Eric Zhang — 8th

Robert bounced back from a tough pool round and fenced brilliantly through the DEs to take the title, while Lucas put together another strong competition to finish on the podium.

A big shout-out to Eric Chen and Eric Zhang, the two youngest fencers in the field. It was their first time competing at this event, and both made the Top 8 against much older and bigger opponents. Great effort from the boys!

A special mention to Eric Chen, who came straight back to the club to train after the competition. Great attitude from one of our youngest competitors.

Women’s Foil

🥇 Irina Zhang — Champion
🥈 Heather Liang — Silver
🥉 Ada Wang — Bronze
🥉 Gabby — Bronze

A fantastic result for the girls, with all four finishing on the podium!

Irina took the title after meeting Heather in the final, with Ada and Gabby both taking bronze.

It was also great to see Gabby on the podium. She regularly makes the trip over from South Australia to train with us, and it’s fantastic to see that hard work paying off.

At Tizona, we encourage our fencers to get out there, represent their schools and gain as much competition experience as possible. It’s great for their development and also helps grow fencing across Australian schools and the wider community.

We’re especially pleased to see our younger fencers starting to step up. Every experienced competitor was once the new kid at their first competition.

The older fencers set the standard, the younger ones keep pushing — and everyone gets better together.

Well done to everyone who competed and represented their schools. Plenty more to come!

Medals are the result. It’s the commitment and growth along the way that matter most.

A big day for Tizona at the 2026 Victorian U15/U17/U20 State Championships!

🏆 5 foil events, 5 gold medals.

Tizona took Gold in every foil event on the day:

🥇 U15 Women’s Foil — Sarah Wei
🥇 U15 Men’s Foil — Matteo Canlas
🥇 U17 Mixed Foil — Heather Liang
🥇 U20 Women’s Foil — Irina Zhang
🥇 U20 Men’s Foil — Robert Zhou

And a few more podium finishes for the team:

🥉 Ivy Chen & Shuyu Zhang — U15 Women’s Foil
🥉 Lena Wei — U17 Mixed Foil
🥈 Lucas Xing & 🥉 Ocean Xing — U20 Men’s Foil

Over in sabre, Nicol Canlas had a great day, taking Gold in U15 Mixed Sabre. 🥇

Nina Canlas also represented Tizona in U20 Mixed Épée and picked up some valuable competition experience.

Some fantastic results across the day, but it’s not just about the medals.

Competition is a chance for our fencers to put their training into practice, test themselves against different opponents and learn what they need to work on next.

It was especially great to see our fencers performing well across U15, U17 and U20. A lot of work goes into these results week in, week out — from the fencers, the coaches and the families supporting them.

Well done to everyone who competed, and thanks as always to our coaches and families for all the support.

A great day on the piste and plenty to build on from here.

🥉 U13 Women’s Foil — Ivy Chen
🥈 U13 Men’s Foil — Eric Chen
🥉 U13 Men’s Foil — Matteo Canlas

🥇 U9 Mixed Sabre — Motong Xu

A special mention goes to Aubrey.

After a year and a half away from competition, she finally stepped onto the competition piste again — and came home with a bronze medal.

But what makes us proud isn’t just the medal.

During that year and a half, Aubrey kept showing up. She trained quietly, stayed patient, kept working, and most importantly, she never gave up.

Progress doesn’t always happen quickly, and hard work doesn’t always bring an immediate reward. Sometimes the most important thing a young athlete can learn is simply to keep going.

This bronze medal represents much more than a place on the podium. It represents persistence, patience and the courage to come back.

We are proud of every Tizona fencer who stepped onto the piste. Medals are valuable, but the discipline, effort and resilience built along the way are worth even more.

Keep going. Keep fighting. Keep growing.

Go Tizona!

Australian National Championships 2026

A strong weekend for Team Tizona in Brisbane.

Ronny fought his way to the Men’s Foil final to claim Silver.

Liam Chen reached the quarter-finals before an unfortunate injury ended his campaign.

In Women’s Foil, Irina finished 6th, while Ada, Heather, and Nina all secured Top 16 finishes.

Most importantly, our athletes showed courage, resilience, and continued improvement against Australia’s best fencers. The gap is closing, and the future is bright.

TIZONA INTRA-CLUB CHALLENGE
On May 17, Tizona proudly hosted our annual Intra-Club Competition, bringing together young fencers across the U8, U10 and U12 categories for a full day of competition, learning and growth.

Created to simulate a real competition environment, the event gave our athletes valuable experience in adapting to real tournament rhythm, managing pressure, and applying their training in live bouts.

The venue was filled with energy throughout the day, with athletes showing determination, courage and sportsmanship on every piste. Beyond the results, the competition reflected the spirit of the Tizona community — athletes supporting one another, families cheering from the sidelines, and coaches guiding every step of the journey.

We would like to sincerely thank all Tizona families for your continued support, our referee and coaching team for their professionalism and dedication, and LingoAce for generously sponsoring prizes for the event.

At Tizona, we believe every competition is an important part of an athlete’s development. Every time a fencer steps onto the piste, they take another step forward in confidence, experience and character.

We are proud of every athlete who competed and look forward to seeing them continue to grow on their fencing journey.
