Kids and parents love our Juniors and Kids classes because we understand that children are still children.
After a full day at school, expecting every child to sit completely quiet and concentrate perfectly for an entire class isn’t always realistic. We keep training fun, energetic and engaging, while still teaching discipline, structure and respect. Kids learn best when they feel safe, connected and excited to be part of the room.
To me , if a child is talking during class it means they are confident and feel safe and comfortable in their environment. There is a time and a place for this and if it’s not the time the kids will be reminded in a way that comes from a place of respect and humilty .
As a parent myself, I understand that every child arrives with a different mood, energy level and capacity to focus. I take the time to read the room and recognise what the kids are capable of on that day. Sometimes the class needs more movement, sometimes it needs a reset, and sometimes the plan needs to change completely. Being a good coach means being able to pivot when needed.
That doesn’t mean lowering our standards. Respect matters, and when it’s time to listen, we expect the kids to show respect to their coaches and training partners. I lead the room with authority, but always with a kind heart.
I also make a point of asking the kids about their day, their favourite subject and what they’ve been up to. Those small conversations help build trust and remind them that they are seen as individuals—not just students in a class.
At Pure Jiu Jitsu, we believe the best coaching combines clear boundaries, genuine connection, high energy and compassion.
To all the coaches out there please remember
“The words that you use as a coach can either light up the room -
or burn the house down.”
These kids will remember you as a coach for the rest of their lives and will talk of you to their own kids one day.
One day all we will be is a memory,
Let’s do our best to be a good one .
