💄LIPTEMBER SPOTLIGHT 2: MEET KATH!💋

Our 2026 Liptember community storytelling campaign continues!
For our 6th year supporting women’s mental health we are highlighting the real, beautiful, and diverse voices of our Zumba with Bec crew. Meet Kath Lane, a wonderful regular in our community!
Many of the women in our community are so busy helping other people that it feels very different to have a spotlight on their own lives. We are so grateful to have is a little glimpse into Kath’s journey today…
Kath, thank you so much for sharing with us!

•What does our Zumba community mean to your mental well-being?

Whatever is going on in my life, I know that when I walk into Zumba class I’m surrounded by laughter, joy, and positivity.
Our Zumba community is more than just a place to dance or exercise, it’s my happy place, and a reminder of how powerful connection and community can be.
I always leave feeling lighter, happier and grateful to be part of something so special.

•How do you find time for self-care in your busy schedule?

I’ve learned that with a busy life, self-care doesn’t just happen, I have to make it a priority. Between working as a counsellor and nurse, volunteering, and being a mum to three busy teenagers, there is always something that needs my attention.
For me, self-care means making sure I get enough sleep, spending time outside each day, swimming, going to the gym and, of course, Zumba.
These things help me recharge, clear my mind and stay connected to myself. I’ve realised that looking after myself isn’t selfish, it’s what allows me to show up as the best version of myself for the people I care about.

•What is one daily habit that keeps you feeling grounded?

Every morning, my husband makes me a cup of tea, and I take a few quiet minutes to sit in bed and ease into the day.
It’s a simple little ritual, but it gives me a moment to pause, gather my thoughts and think about what the day ahead might bring. Starting my mornings this way helps me feel calm, grounded and ready to start the day.

•How do you manage the invisible "mental load" of everyday life?

I talk to someone.. my husband, a friend, my mum.
I acknowledge the things that are beyond my control and take steps such as setting boundaries, sharing responsibilities and asking for support.

•Do you have a favorite quote or words you live by?

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Ferris Bueller.

A lovely morning in the audience watching family at the Blue Mountains Nepean Dance Festival 2026 at The Joan.
I’m feeling inspired by the next generation of local dancers, so talented and joyous as well as the dedication of the teachers of our public education system keeping dance alive in NSW. Well done to everyone involved 💃🕺👌🥰

I look forward to dancing with you this week at Zumba with Bec!

To kick off our 2026 Liptember community stories, I am stepping into the spotlight first! For our 6th year, we are skipping the standard charity event to highlight the real, beautiful, and diverse voices of our Zumba with Bec crew. By sharing our stories one at a time, we hope to smash stigmas, celebrate our inclusive Blue Mountains community, and raise vital funds for the Liptember Foundation. Here is a little glimpse into my own mental health journey... ✨

•How does dancing with our Zumba crew boost your mood?

"It’s pure joy! As an introverted extrovert with anxiety, walking into a room full of smiling faces completely resets my brain. The music takes over; we smile, we yell out, we pose and make silly faces, we laugh when we go the wrong way and any heavy thoughts just melt away on the dance floor. I feel that dance and Zumba are a form of mindfulness, there is no time to think about anything else or ruminate as you are completely in the present moment whether you are instructing or participating.”

•What does our Zumba community mean to your mental well-being?

"It means everything. I started Zumba with Bec because dancing, specifically Zumba helped me so much with my anxiety and depression that I wanted to pay it forward, help others and spread joy. The Zumba with Bec community we have created together over the last 11 years is a safe inclusive space where we connect, break the stigma, and remind each other that we are never alone."

•How do you "shake off the blues" during a busy week?

"I use 'dopamine dressing'—putting on bright, expressive outfits or a bold lip to instantly lift my energy. If I'm physically tracking toward burnout or a migraine, I shake off the blues by stepping away to recharge quietly with a rest if I can, re-watching a favourite TV series, photography, a craft project, or tending to my cactus garden."

•How do you find time for self-care in your busy schedule?

"I’ve had to learn the hard way that rest is a necessity, not a reward for productivity!
I schedule downtime just like a fitness class. For me, self-care looks like slipping away to a quiet local café for brunch, a clinical pilates or massage session, a little sweet treat, or just enjoying my own company in a peaceful space."

•What is one daily habit that keeps you feeling grounded?

"Since being diagnosed with AuDHD three years ago, understanding my neurodivergent brain has been life-changing. My number one grounding habit is giving myself permission to listen to my body, unmask and have completely quiet, alone time every single day to let my nervous system settle."

•How do you manage the invisible "mental load" of everyday life?

"By being honest about my limits and sharing the load. I try to normalize talking about the messy parts of life, because hiding them makes the load heavier. I think this is incredibly important to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encourage community connection. When the mental chatter gets too noisy, apart from Zumba I lean into my sense of humour and my creative passions like interior design, vintage/op-shopping and collecting or crafting to give my mind a happy place to focus. Even just photographing small moments from my phone camera helps to keep me present and hopeful, glimmers of joy are so important.”

•Finally, do you have any favourite quotes?

“Two quotes by RuPaul Charles:

“If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?” and my favourite “What other people think of me is not my business.”

🌸 SPRING IS HERE & WE KICKED IT OFF IN STYLE! 🌸

Wow, yesterday was absolutely incredible!
We officially welcomed Spring with our biggest ever Zumba Gold class at Warrimoo! 💃✨
Thank you to every single beautiful face who came along to dance, laugh, and shake off the winter chills.
The energy in the room was unmatched! (Swipe to see our gorgeous crew! 📸)

Yesterday also marked Day 1 of September, which means Zumba with Bec’s 6th annual Liptember campaign is officially underway! 💄🧠
As you know, women’s mental health is incredibly close to my heart.
This year as we celebrate 11 years of ZWBEC, we are doing things a little differently.
Instead of just one big charity ZumbaGOLDathon event with online fundraising, we are running an all-online storytelling campaign right here on our page!💋

OUR 2026 LIPTEMBER GOAL:
We want to smash our yearly fundraising goal for Liptember 2026 and add to our cumulative total, but more importantly, we want to educate, advocate and break the stigma around Women’s Mental Health.
Over the next four weeks, we will be featuring the real, diverse, and inspiring women of our own Blue Mountains Zumba with Bec community.
Keep an eye out for our first participant spotlight dropping soon!🗓️ (spoiler alert, the first one is me! 😆💃🏻🥰)

It was an honour to lead the first Peer Work Dance Party this morning at the Penrith Medicare Mental Health Clinic, spreading some Zumba Gold joy to the local Peer Worker network and celebrate the vital work they do in our community helping our most vulnerable people. Thank you all for getting out of your comfort zone and giving it a go, you were fantastic!
Special thanks to Jemima Isbester for your vision in creating this event and bringing people together. Thank you for the opportunity!

REPOST from Jemima Isbester: National Lived Experience Practice Lead for Neami National on LinkedIn

***************
Today was one for the books.
We held our first ever Peer Work DANCE Party in Penrith — and the energy was unreal.

Neami peer workers Jade Garcia and Dave Grooube came together with Senior Peer Worker Tamara Northey, Koori Yarner Lance Chilley, and local Zumba instructor Bec Lewis to create a space built on joy, movement, culture, and connection.

We were joined by allies Veronique Jordaan and Jae Radican rounding out a circle of people who care deeply about community and peer‑led spaces.

What happened today wasn’t “just a dance session.”
It was the seed of local area talks, stronger peer networks, and a growing ecosystem of connection across the Nepean region. Western Sydney is full of incredible peers — and when we gather, something powerful happens.

Joy builds trust.
Movement builds community.
And peers build each other.

I’m excited for what this moment will grow into.

If you were there — what was your favourite moment?
