⚠️ SPRING & SUMMER TRAIL SAFETY 🚴☀️🐍

With spring here and summer just around the corner, we think it’s prudent to remind everyone heading out onto the Rail Trails that the warmer months bring a few additional hazards.

We recently received feedback from one of our customers, Ian, whose ride unfortunately ended earlier than planned after encountering a particularly aggressive magpie near Harlin.

Ian was swooped head-on and, while trying to avoid the bird, his front wheel skidded in the gravel. He came off his bike, injured his ribs and buckled his front wheel badly enough that he couldn’t continue his ride.

Thankfully, Ian was able to get assistance and, despite the accident, still had some wonderful things to say about his adventure:

“Whilst the trip didn't end the way I envisaged, it was an adventure and overall the experience was positive. The travel through the Blackbutt Range was fantastic.”

He even managed a freshly brewed coffee while listening to the bellbirds and stumbled across a vintage Land Rover rally in Linville along the way. That’s the Rail Trail for you — you never quite know what the day will bring!

Ian also told us he plans to return next year to finish his adventure — after magpie season. We reckon that’s a fairly sensible condition. 😉

His experience is also a timely reminder that magpie swooping isn’t simply an annoyance. A rider’s instinctive reaction to a swooping bird can potentially lead to a fall, particularly on loose gravel.

As the weather warms up, please be prepared for:

☀️ HEAT – Carry plenty of water, use sunscreen and wear suitable sun-protective clothing.

🐍 SNAKES – They’re more active in warmer weather. Most will want to get away from you just as quickly as you want to get away from them, but always give them plenty of space.

🐦 MAGPIES – Swooping season generally runs from August to November and we’re already receiving reports from cyclists in several locations. Stay calm, keep moving steadily and avoid shouting, waving your arms or reacting aggressively.

🪖 BE PREPARED – Sunglasses can help protect your eyes, while bird-scarer tape, cable ties and helmet brims such as a Da Brim are options riders may wish to consider.

Most importantly, don’t panic or make sudden movements if you are swooped. Your priority is to remain in control of your bike and get through the area safely.

The Rail Trails are magnificent at this time of year. A little preparation and awareness can help keep the adventure memorable for all the right reasons.

Ride smart. Stay aware. And keep enjoying the great outdoors. 🚴🌿

A beautiful day at The Harlin Hotel If your in the need of a coffee I am here ☕️😎 I wont be open tomorrow due to a llama wrangling gig 🦙 But planning to open up Sunday 7am if your driving or riding past please stop in. My first vistor for the day has dropped in and pumped up for a big day 🤔 His preference is definitely greeting the cyclists.
