One of the coolest photos ever taken of me. 😍

This was my first competition match at black belt. The last time I’d competed was many years earlier, as a blue belt.

Nearly every single person you can see in that crowd... all the way to the back of the stands, bar three, was an ICONIC student at the time. And the majority of them still are today.

But this photo isn’t really about me.

It’s about our community.

Someone said to me recently, “I would see you guys at competitions as a team and feel a little jealous.”

I understood exactly what they meant.

Because when someone from Iconic steps onto the competition mats, they never step out there alone. There is an entire team behind them... watching, yelling, pacing, celebrating and occasionally looking far more nervous than the person actually competing. 😂

That kind of culture doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built over years of showing up for one another, not only for the big moments, but for the ordinary nights, the hard rounds, the setbacks and everything in between.

I may be the one standing on the mat in this photo, but what makes it so special is everyone standing behind me.

That has always been ICONIC. 💜
