H5 bird flu has been detected in some Victorian wetlands.

Boating and fishing can continue as normal in most areas.

If there has been a recent mortality event, avoid activities that could expose you to contaminated water, including swimming, wading, fishing and boating.

▪ Avoid direct contact with sick or dead birds
▪ Wash your hands thoroughly after visiting areas where wild birds gather
▪ Supervise children and pets around affected areas

If you see sick or dead birds or wildlife:
▪ avoid direct contact
▪ record the exact location and what you observed
▪ report it online

Ever wanted to tie a fly? At our Ballarat Fishing Festival on Saturday September 5, Ballarat Fly Fishers Club will be hosting fly-tying demonstrations including explanations about how hand-made flies imitate insect life in lakes and streams.

For those wanting to learn the fine art of fly fishing, they’ll also be hosting free fly-fishing lessons for adults and teenagers – bookings required.

Festivalgoers can take a free tour of the Ballarat Fish Acclimatisation Society hatchery, which has been raising trout in the region for more than 150 years, and local fishing clubs will have freshwater boats on display.

To find out more about the day and book a fly-fishing lesson, visit www.vfa.vic.gov.au/ballaratfishfest.

Club members during the week spent a couple of days at Millbrook Lakes Millbrook Lakes on our annual trip there. As you can see in the photos, some large trout were caught. Fun was had by all. A big thankyou to the people who run Millbrook Lakes with their guidance and facilities.
