Shihan Athula Jayasinghe is the Sri Lankan Representative for Teshinkai International Karate-Do.

A seasoned martial artist with decades of experience, Shihan Jayasinghe has played an important role in the development of karate in Sri Lanka and has been responsible for launching the careers of many martial artists who have gone on to become established practitioners and instructors in their own right.

As a retired police officer, he also brings a lifetime of experience in discipline, responsibility and service to the community. He understands that karate, particularly for young people, must be about far more than learning how to fight. It should develop confidence, respect, resilience, character and a sense of personal responsibility.

In Sri Lanka, where martial arts can play an important role in the development of children and young people, Shihan Jayasinghe has become a beacon of strength, loyalty and integrity.

Today, Teshinkai continues to grow through a number of branches across Sri Lanka. With senior instructors including Sensei Nalaka Weerasinghe taking responsibility for the management and development of branches, the lineage, standards and future development of Teshinkai remain firmly intact.

This is how a martial arts organisation develops strength across generations - experienced senior leaders establishing the foundation, while trusted instructors are given the responsibility to carry the organisation forward.

For students participating in the Teshinkai School Karate Programs of Shihan Raju Mathew in Kerala, India, karate is far more than an extracurricular activity.

It is a structured and affordable character-development program designed to complement a child’s education - building confidence, discipline, respect, resilience and a sense of personal responsibility.

This is an important part of the Teshinkai philosophy. While we teach karate, our greater responsibility is to help develop the person wearing the belt.

Through his work, children are being given access to quality martial arts instruction within the school environment, making the benefits of karate available to families who may otherwise never have considered entering a traditional dojo.
