There are no rules if someone attacks you. None .. at .. all.
There is no such thing as ‘dirty fighting’ or ‘cheating’ if someone attacks you.
If you have to gouge eyes, bite chunks out, strike the groin or rip someone’s ears or nose, that’s exactly what you do to protect your own life.
Here are some simple and pretty easy defences against the side headlock .. just for fun.
(I said we do 3, but we actually did 4)

Side Headlock Defence #4
There are three other options I would try before this one, but it works very well on the mat where you have plenty of space. Obviously not something you would try in a pub or a crowded environment.
I’ll share three other options tomorrow.
Great to see Master Wong incorporating the SHIELD defence, ram, knees, hammer fists and elbows into his Wing Chun.
After incorporating ICS Close Quarters Combat from Peter Sciarra we have been teaching this exact technique in our self defence curriculum for the past two years.

Simultaneous block and attack - a key principle of Wing Chun Kung Fu.
Here we block a knife strike and simultaneously strike with claw fingers to the eyes and face.
With a moving target, fingers are apart to maximise chance of hitting the eyes. If not, the fingers can claw the face to disorient the attacker before dealing with the knife .. or fleeing.
Reality is not pretty. Reality is random and unpredictable. Reality is rough and dirty. It has no rules.
We practice techniques slowly to build our muscle memory and train our instinct.
But you have to to increase the speed gradually because reality has no rules and no forgiveness.

Congratulations to Mark and Paul who achieved their Level 6 last night. This has been a journey of over five years, but gradings should never be rushed.
When defending against a knife, the preferred options are always:
1. Run
2. Deflect then run.
3. Use objects like chairs, bags etc.
4. Defend at a distance eg low kicks etc
5. Engage & defend at exchange range
6. Engage and defend at close quarters.
This is an example of a close quarters technique against a slash to the face or throat. This is done slowly so you can see complete control of the knife arm at all times. The wrist strike at the end is pretty soft because if it’s done hard, it’ll break the wrist when the wrist is supinated.
