WILLIAMS TOP 5 AT RECENT NATIONAL SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY

On a warm day recently in Sydney, some of our youngest athletes represented SA in the Schools National cross country. The team was managed by past Flinders athlete JEFF WRAY who many would know.

If you have been out at Flinders University on Tuesday or Thursday night you see a large squad of youngsters training hard, but also enjoying themselves.

Young EDWARD WILLIAMS back up his AA top 8 performance by going three places better in the 11yrB to come fifth. Not to be outdone CODY KENYON, HARRY THOMAS and LEO EWER placed well to be presented with a controversial ’bronze’ medal in the team’s event, only to find out later they were supposed to be fourth. They got to keep the medal. Later in the week SA got a real bronze in the Relay event.

In the 11yrG MARIA KOWALCZYK, GRACE JOLLEY AND AMELIA LOITERTON made up most of the SA team.

The 12yrB race was hotly contested. ROCCO KENYON didn’t have his best day, that happens sometimes. What is important he finished to help his team. Great to see LOGAN MORLEY have a strong run, as did EDDIE SHEPPARD, giving SA a well deserved bronze in the teams event. A repeat on Relay day with another bronze medal for the SA team.

OLIVIA HAMS GARRIGA got the job done in the 12yrG race.

2026-27 Registrations

The new season is about to start, and we are hoping that you will compete for the club once again.

We have had a great twelve months with our Under 14 Girls winning a summer premiership, along with our dominant winter winning five premierships, only missing the Open men’s.

The new registration period has started; track and field competition commences on Saturday 10th October.

If you go to the membership page on our website where we have all the relevant information about memberships and competition fees.

https://www.revolutionise.com.au/flinders/registration

Use the RETURNING MEMBER button at the bottom of the page or you can go via ASA websites membership page.

What Membership to take out?

As you have already had a season, or many in the case of some, you should have an idea as to the membership that suits.

For those who are unsure of what membership to take out here is a guide (in no order):

There is a new WINTER ADD-ON ($60) which is something to consider if you plan to run at Fitzy’s 5, Flinders Cross Country, and State Cross Country ($65) only. Remember the Ekiden and Mixed Relays are Free (Club pays the fee). The savings is marginal, so not going to be a game changer.

If you plan to compete in track and field events (goes through to April next year) then best membership options are GOLD and maybe SILVER (if compete much less).

If you are Under 16 on 31st December the most cost-effective membership is U16 GOLD unless you are only going to compete a small number of times.

If you are regularly competing (8 or more days) during the summer then take out the GOLD membership, otherwise take out SILVER membership.

If you are going to run less than 5 summer premiership/launch, then RECREATIONAL membership is slightly more cost effective than SILVER membership.

If you are ONLY training Flinders University or competing in SAAL events and maybe an occasional summer premiership event, then RECREATIONAL membership is the one for you.

If you primarily compete in distance events and the winter, then the best membership depends on how many competitions in the summer you run. For anyone doing the three State Championships (3000, 5000, 10000) and at least one ADS or track 1500, 3000 then SILVER membership is more cost effective.

If you have ANY membership, you are a registered athlete for the club and are eligible to run in RELAYS (summer and winter) for FREE (club pays).

Finally, if you want to compete at the NATIONAL track and field championships in April then you must have a SILVER or GOLD membership.

If you still have trouble deciding, then reach out.

RELAY GOLD IN DAEGU FOR HOBBS

After a long week competing in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 4x100m, TONY HOBBS was third leg in the winning M50 4x400m relay team.

In Tony’s own words
“Cracking last day in Daegu, Australia was punching well above its weight taking out 3 consecutive 4x400m age groups.
I was blessed to be in one of them.
Thanks to my team mates and all of the support, both near and far.
I think I ran a 56.59 split, which I am pretty happy with as my training has been impacted this last month”.

Our club has athletes of all ages ranging from eleven through to seventies!

There is competitions for everyone. Competing at the World Masters Chsmpionship is special. This was a special moment never forgotten.

Just reward for all the hard work Tony puts in, both on and off the track.

HOLLAND-SMITH HEADS GREAT WEEKEND AT BALLARAT

Last weekends National Cross Country Championships at Ballarat really tested the strength, mindset and resilience of competitors. If you haven’t seen the pictures, the course was mud, mud and more mud. Well except for the water, man made hills, and just for measure the logs out on the 2k loop. It was great to be there in person to see everyone slog it out in their races! This was a classic case of positions versus times.

In the women’s 10k KATE HOLLAND-SMITH made her way through the field over the first three laps moving up into the top 15. From there it was a challenge to keep others at bay and move up to finish 13th. In her first senior cross country ISABEL HOBBS had to step up from 6k to 10k and too her credit slogged it out to the end – a great experience.

There were some fantastic top ten finishes with ROCCO KENYON (U13) getting 4th place on the finish line, MARTINA HAMS GARRIGA (U15) was super strong on the second lap coming through get 6th place after finishing 26th last year, and EDDIE WILLIAMS (U12) who got in the lead group early and hung onto 8th. It can’t be estimated how hard it is to come top ten at the national cross country.

With big fields, the conditions, there were plenty of other great performances. One that stood out was LACHLAN HODGES (U17) who has made massive improvements this year to finish 17th but was 13th Australian.

EDDIE SHEPPARD (U13) proved why it’s important to run to the end and beat as many competitors as possible. His 23rd enabled the SA team including Rocco Kenyon to grab U13 team silver. Martina’s performance was instrumental in giving the U15 girls a team bronze. The young U12 squad missed a medal by 1 point.

The photos (ASA & Paul Sutcliffe) show many of our athletes in action.

HOLLAND-SMITH STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPION

It was a dominant display at the recent cross country championships at Waite Arboretum, when KATE HOLLAND-SMITH extended her lead every lap to comfortable win the Open Women’s 10k title. Big props to ISABEL HOBBS and CHELSEA DREDGE for representing the club in arguably the toughest event of the winter calendar.

Congratulations to EDWARD WILLIAMS (U12), MARIA KOWALCZYK (U12) and RACHEL HOBBS (O50) on their championship winning runs.

As expected plenty of other podium finishes for Flinders athletes.
