#1 – Jeff Willey (2023/24)

What else could it be! One of the greatest performances the PSCA has ever seen. A hundred and a 5fa in a Grand Final to cap off an undefeated premiership season.

Jarrah’s men entered the 2023/24 4th Grade Grand Final after a week of massive controversy. Hillcrest Reserve disappointingly underwent works for the upcoming football season before we had the opportunity to host the Grand Final. Radio interviews, news articles, it certainly caused plenty of discussion.

Anyway, we took our talents to Emberson Reserve for the final game in March.

Jeff and Wayne got us off to the perfect start, putting on 108 for the first wicket. Jeff pushed on to bring up a magnificent century, becoming one of only a handful of men to score a Grand Final hundred for the club. It was a dominant knock on the biggest stage and helped set Ascot a huge 246 to win.

We returned the next day to a brilliant atmosphere at Emberson, and Willey immediately got to work with the ball, removing both openers early.

Ascot fought back and rebuilt to 4/132, and suddenly the game was genuinely in the balance. Jeff claimed his third, but at 7/213 with 10 overs remaining, our undefeated season was under serious threat.

Luke grabbed the eighth wicket.

Then Willey finished what he started.

Two wickets in the next over. Game over. Premiers. Undefeated.

A century with the bat. Five wickets with the ball. In a Grand Final.

It doesn’t get much better than that.

We’d like to thank everyone for the support over the last six weeks. It’s been great fun digging through the archives, reliving some incredible games and giving a bit of recognition to the players and performances that have shaped the club over the last two decades.

Hopefully we can do something similar again in the future!

#2 - Phil Scott (2009/10)

This one might be controversial! There’s definitely an argument that this one deserves number 1. The highest individual score in club history and part of maybe the most dominant victory we’ve ever seen.

Phil Scott had a relatively short career for the Bulldogs, but it was certainly an impressive one. Five hundreds in just 31 matches!

Our top side faced Punjabi C&S at Beatty Park in the last game before finals. The opposition won the toss and chose to bat, only to be bundled out for 59, just 90 minutes after the first ball.

What came next was arguably the most dominant display of ball striking the club has ever seen, and maybe ever will.

18 fours. 18 sixes. Balls landing on the roofs of houses. Absolute carnage.

Phil smashed his way to the highest individual score in club history, with the Bulldogs piling on the runs in just 42 overs. Pure domination.

We returned the following week and rolled them for a second time to complete one of the most crushing outright victories in PCA history.

And the timing of Phil’s knock makes it even crazier. Just six days earlier, he had made 111 against WASTCA in the Representative Colts Grand Final, after which this photo was taken.

We actually had four BPCC players in that side, Phil Scott, Beau Anthony, Liam Scott and a very young James Ward-Armstrong.

A club-record innings, an enormous outright victory and a performance that still stands alone all these years later. The next highest First XI score in our countdown period was Christian O’Brien’s 146 in 2012.

I’m sure we all know what #1 is now…

#3 - Nick Halloran (2019/20)

We’re right at the pointy end of the list now. A massive performance from one of the club’s great men and our second Kiwi 8-fa in a row!

They didn’t know it at the time, but this performance may have just about single-handedly gifted our Third Grade boys the flag.

Over at Maguire Reserve, Wes won the toss and chose to bat against SKLP. The ever-reliable James top-scored with 67, with handy contributions from Greg and the Big Fossil helping us reach 186. A decent score at Maguire, but we were still going to have to bowl well.

What came next was the best top-side bowling spell our club has seen in the last 30 years.

Nicko tore through SKLP with the hardly believable figures of 8/13 off 14 overs. Eight wickets for just 13 runs. Nearly half of his 14 overs were maidens, and SKLP simply had no answer. In a match that would ultimately decide the minor premiership, Nick produced one of the most dominant spells in our club’s recent history.

SKLP were rolled for just 49, giving us the chance to enforce the follow-on and push for the outright.

The opposition showed a little more resistance in the second dig, but Nicko added another two wickets to complete his 10-fa, putting his name on the small list of Bulldogs to take 10 wickets in a match.

It was a more balanced bowling effort second time around, with Nicko, Duncan and James taking two each, while skipper Wes bagged four. Most who played in this game will also remember substitute fielder John taking the match-winning catch with his gut to secure the outright!

The victory secured the minor premiership, which became even more significant when the season was cancelled due to COVID shortly after. With no finals able to be played, our boys were awarded the 2019/20 Third Grade Premiership.

Safe to say Nicko’s 10 wickets played a fairly big part in bringing that flag home.

#4 - Duncan Clark (2014/15)

A man a lot of us were lucky not to face in his prime. Arguably the most dominant top-side bowler of the last couple of decades, Duncan Clark lands at #5 on our countdown.

Our boys’ season was on a knife’s edge. Having lost five of their last seven games, we were just holding onto a finals spot. A loss here would’ve made finals an unlikely outcome.

Sent in to bat, we were immediately in trouble. Just one of the top seven made double figures and, with wickets falling regularly, we were staring at a very small total. Some important lower-order runs from Ross George and our main man Duncan scraped us up to a below-par 129.

Early wickets were absolutely crucial. Without them, our season was most likely over.

And early wickets are exactly what we got.

Coolbinia were bundled out for just 65, with Clark producing the remarkable figures of 8/25 — the second-best First XI figures of our entire countdown period!

What a performance. Defending 129 with your season effectively on the line, and one man takes eight of the ten wickets.

And he didn’t stop there.

Duncan took another three wickets in the next match before claiming seven wickets across the first two finals, helping set up a Grand Final against Stirling.

And we all know what happened there… 🏆

A career-best season in a premiership year:

#5 - Mick Armstrong (2017/18)

A premiership-winning performance from Mick Armstrong in a match that was scarily similar to our First Grade Grand Final earlier this year. Away from home, bundled out for a low total, before somehow finding a way to defend it.

Shaun’s Fifth Grade boys faced top-of-the-table Ascot at Middleton in the club’s first Grand Final in three years. Like plenty of matches in our countdown, we batted first and struggled, scraping our way to a well below-par 113. Solid contributions from Pup, Neil and Smart gave us something to bowl at, but it was going to take a massive effort.

With the season on the line, Pup removed both openers to give us a glimmer of hope. Ascot’s No. 3 and 4 then steadied things, putting on nearly 50 and seemingly taking control of the game.

Chase, who produced a crucial spell of his own, removed both to bring us back into it. But Ascot’s No. 5 knuckled down and once again made it look like the game, and the premiership was slipping away.

Skipper Shaun threw Mick the ball knowing that, one way or another, this game was going to be over within the next hour.

Mick immediately removed both set batsmen. Suddenly, Ascot needed around 15 runs with three wickets remaining.

What followed was a remarkable finish. Mick and Chase combined to take the final 3/8, bowling Ascot out and completing one of the great Grand Final escapes! 🏆

Rumour has it we even had to ask permission for Mick to play in this one as he wasn’t qualified. It was just his second match of the season in the 2nd XI, but when the premiership was there to be won, he stood up.

Just a nine-over spell, but it couldn’t have come at a more important time.

A premiership won defending 113 away from home.

#6 - Matt Smart (2018/19)

Maybe the best all-round performance of the entire list!

Our Fifth Grade side batted first against Leederville at Hillcrest and got off to a decent start thanks to openers Jockey and Aaron Agate. Captain Shaun (Batting 3?) then fell cheaply, bringing Matt Smart to the crease.

From ball one, Smart took it to the Leederville attack, smashing his way to a rapid 113. With some good support from Juddy and Knuckey, the boys piled on a massive 266.

He returned the following week with the ball and picked up exactly where he left off. Smart tore through the top order, removing the top four batsmen in his opening spell, before returning later to clean up the tail.

His final figures? An incredible 7/34.

Shoutout to Shaun Craig who made a pair 🦆 in this game.

Remarkably, Smart’s 113 was the highest individual score by any BPCC player that season, while his 7/34 was also the best bowling performance by anyone at the club.

And they came in the same game!

Based purely on the numbers, this could easily be right up there with the very best performances of the last 20 years.

But our Top Five features some of the most crucial performances in club history.
