Community youth football should be about inclusion, development, enjoyment, and keeping kids engaged in the game for as long as possible.
Lately, it’s becoming harder to ignore the impact of team stacking, aggressive recruiting, and one-sided competitions across community club based football. Blowout scorelines might deliver short-term wins, but they can also lead to discouraged players, disengaged teams, and kids walking away from the sport altogether.
The goal at grassroots level shouldn’t just be building the strongest squads possible. It should be creating environments where all players can learn, contribute, improve, and feel supported regardless of ability.
Balanced competition matters. Development matters. Retention matters.
If we genuinely care about the future of grassroots & community football, then inclusion, sportsmanship, and player wellbeing need to sit alongside the ambition and success of the adults facilitating the space.
