A reminder to Wednesday bowlers that as it’s the last Wednesday of the month this week, bring a plate, stay and enjoy lunch together and celebrate the August birthdays. 🎂

Six games of social bowls were played on Saturday afternoon, five triples and a game of pairs.

On Rink 1 Kevin Dwyer, Peter Phegan and Craig Bush played Max Elms, Dick Graham and David Josh. Josh led the first eleven ends but Bush took the lead 12-11 on end twelve after scoring a 4. Bush increased their lead to 4 shots with three ends to play but Josh scored the next 7 shots to regain the lead. Bush scored a single on the last end, but Josh was the winner 21-19.

2 shots was also the final margin on Rink 2 where Frank Brouwers, Russ MacPherson and Lotsi Kosta were up against Russell Deans, Mick Sewell and Tim Pickstone. Pickstone had the early advantage before Kosta tied scores on end nine. Kosta then won all but one of the next seven ends and pushed their lead out to 11 shots. It was Pickstone who then went on a run and outscored Kosta 10 shots to 1 over the remaining ends. Kosta held on to win 21-19.

Allan Clark, Sue Murray and John Toole took on Peter Sharp, John Lane and Peter Zylstra on Rink 3. After nine ends, this game could have gone either way, with Toole leading 10-8 at that point. Toole then took control and only allowed Zylstra the mat on two further occasions throughout the game. Toole was a comfortable winner 28-11.

On Rink 4 Peter Ryan, Dennis Harvey and Tony Urza played Paul Rodenhuis, Sally Colebatch and Gary Nathan. Urza had the early lead, winning the first three ends before Nathan recovered to be leading 11-9 after eleven ends. Nathan went on to win all but two of the remaining ends and took the win 21-13.

The lead changed a number of times on Rink 5 where Ron Hogan, Jeff Adams and Mick Foxall played Jim Clark, Des Sanders and Vicki Weal. Weal led 10-9 after eleven ends and had extended that to four shots with four ends to play, Foxall scored the next 6 shots to hold a 2 shot lead with the last end to play. Weal scored a 3 on this end to sn**ch the win 18-17.

The pairs game was the final game on Saturday, and John Mackey and Peter Drew played Mark McKean and Mick Sewell. Sewell picked up a 5 on the first end and after having the better of the first thirteen ends, led 18-8. Drew got back into the game by scoring the next 8 shots and Sewell’s lead was reduced to 2 shots with two ends to play. These ends were shared and Sewell held on to win 21-19.

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon 20 bowlers came along for a social bowl.

Greg Cross, Sue Murray and Kathy Evans were tied with Pauline Clark, Dick Graham and Robyn Adams after six ends. Evans were in control of the game after scoring the next 11 shots and went on to win this game 19-9.

In a pairs game Ray Miller and John Toole took on Judy Sharp and Glenn Carter. Toole won the first end and was never headed in this game. They were too good for Carter on the day, winning 27-6.

The second triples game saw Allan Clark, Ron McGarry and Terry James play Helen Taylor, Jodie James and Gary Nathan. James won the first three ends before Nathan tied scores at 6 all and then went on to lead 11-6. James retook the lead after scoring 7 unanswered shots and Nathan tied the game at 13 all by scoring a 2 on the last end.

Merle Stephens and Paul Rodenhuis were up against Beryl Flanagan and Noel Witney in the last game. Rodenhuis led 8-4 after eight ends but dropped the next 5 shots to give Witney the lead. Witney was still leading by a single shot with an end to play. Rodenhuis scored the necessary single to tie the game at 12 all.

A beautiful day for Saturday bowls. 35 bowlers enjoying the day and many of them in their new Drakes Pride shoes from Wicklow Bowls & Sports.

Our Gala Day with a theme of “A little bit of Country” was held yesterday and teams from Oberon, Lithgow City, Canowindra, Wallerawang and Lithgow Workies joined us for the day. Beautiful weather and lovey morning tea and lunch contributed to a great day which was enjoyed by all.

Winners on the day were Ian Hobbs, Sally Colebatch and Peter Drew and Runners- up were Gayle Howard, Robyn Rowe and Gary Nathan.

Thanks to Ian, Sally and Judy for the donation of prizes for the raffle and lucky door prizes.

As always, a special thank you to Robyn and Val for their amazing work in the kitchen, Bill for cooking the BBQ, Peter for the music and everyone else who helped out during the day.

We continue to get good numbers for Tuesday afternoon social bowls and this week seven games of triples and a game of pairs were played.

The closest result of the day was in the game on Rink 1 where Gerard Davies, John Lane and John Toole played Terry Chifley, Kevin Arrow and Brian Hope. This was a low scoring game with the level six times throughout. Toole held the biggest margin of the day, leading 15-13 with two ends to play. Hope tied scores on the next end, but Toole took the win 16-15 after scoring a single shot on the last end.

On Rink 2 Wayne Eason, Dick Graham and Darrell Ryan took on Jake Shurmer, Jim Clark and Jeff Adams. Ryan had a good lead after winning the first five ends and did not really let Adams into the game. Adams finished well and won the last three ends, but Ryan was too good on the day, winning 27-11.

George Ballard, Col Pickstone and Peter Drew played Allan Clark, Mick Burke and Greg Hallett on Rink 3. Drew won the first three ends and had built up a 10-shot lead after thirteen ends. That was as good as it got for Drew, as Hallet finished strongly by winning all the remaining ends and going on to win 26-18.

The lead changed a number of times over the first sixteen ends on Rink 4 where Peter Sharp, Mark McKean and Tony Cronhurst were up against Graham Stocks, Ron McGarry and Tim Pickstone. Very little separated the sides up to that point and Cronhurst was leading 14-13. Pickstone then turned things around, scoring the next 12 shots over four ends. Cronhurst won the last, but Pickstone was the winner 25-17.

Rink 5 saw Bill Dawson, Ron Hogan and Darryl Shurmer play Russell Deans, Kevin Dwyer and Noel Witney. Witney led 8-4 after six ends and then took control of the game by winning the next six ends. Shurmer won their share of the remaining ends, but Witney took this game 22-10.

Paul Rodenhuis and Gary Nathan played John Bosson and Dan Rochfort in the pairs game on Rink 6. Nathan led 10-9 after eleven ends before Rochfort won the next seven ends and led 21-10. Nathan outscored Rochfort 9-2 over the remaining ends but fell short with Rochfort holding on to win 23-19.

After dropping 14 shots over two ends, Greg Stocks, Jerry Davis and Kevin Miller were up against it when playing Frank Brouwers, Paul Delaney and Mick Foxall on Rink 7. Miller came close, winning the majority of ends over the length of the game, but could not quite make up for those two ends and the win went to Foxall 24-20.

In the final game Peter Phegan, Peter Ryan and Russ MacPherson played Bill Mackey, Gordon Death and John Mackey. MacPherson won the first three ends and was never headed in this game. They had pushed their lead out to 10 shots with five ends to play and kept the pressure on to win this game 25-13.

The Tuesday Jackpot also went off this week with +8 being the lucky number. It was shared by players on Rinks 3 and 4, congratulations to all.

The beautiful autumn afternoon brought 53 bowlers out on Saturday, and six games of fours were played as well as a game of triples.

Val Zylstra played sw***er in the triples game with Mick Foxall and Greg Hallett against Colin Pickstone and Hugh Brennan on Rink 9. Brennan had the better start and led 13-6 after eight ends. Hallett had tied the scores after thirteen ends and scores were tied again with three ends to play. Brennan won all three ends to take the game 26-19. However, all were winners on this rink with the margin of 7 being the lucky jackpot number, so all took their share of the jackpot home, and it will start again from $0 next Saturday.

The side of Allan Clark, John Lane, Leonie McGarry and Paul Galvin could not be separated from Paul Francis, Mark McKean, Dennis Harvey and Craig Townsend at the end of their game. Galvin had a handy lead 9-3 after nine ends but dropped 5 shots on the next end to Townsend. In a low scoring game, Townsend had a 2 shot advantage with the last end to play, but Galvin scored 2 shots to tie the game at 15 all.

On Rink 11 Kevin Dwyer, Max Elms, Sue Murray and Mick McDonald played Ron Hogan, Louise Francis, Glen Carter and Tim Pickstone. Only a shot or two separated these teams over sixteen ends with Pickstone leading 16-15 at that point. Pickstone dominated the last five ends and outscored McDonald 13-1, including 7 shots on the last end, and ran away with the game 29-16.

Jeff Webster, George Ballard, Peter Zylstra and Noel Witney were down against Steve Corby, Jim Clark, Greg Cross and Susie Simmons on Rink 12. Trailing 8-20 after sixteen ends, Witney staged a comeback by winning the next four ends and scoring 10 shots. Simmons scored a single on the last end to win a close game in the end 21-18.

On Rink 13 Peter Phegan, Vicki Weal, Ron McGarry and David Josh played Liz Draper, Andrew Moffatt, Mick Simmons and Robyn Adams. Josh was the better team over the early ends and led 19-5 after eleven ends. They kept the pressure on although Adams did finish well by winning the last three ends. Josh was too good on the day and won this game 27-14.

Bill Dawson, Jodie James, John Mackey and Gary Nathan were in control for most of their game against Judy Sharp, Paul Rodenhuis, Marcus Ronan and John Toole on Rink 14. They won ten of the first fifteen ends and led 14-8 at that point. Toole then scored a 4 to get back into the game although they still trailed by 3 shots with an end to play. Toole stole the game by scoring 5 shots on that end and took the win 18-16.

In the final game Peter Sharp, Frank Brouwers, Dick Graham and Mick Sewell played Rod Lorimer, Gary Cameron, Des Sanders and Jeff Adams. After eleven ends Sewell led 14-6 but Adams then went on a run, winning six consecutive ends and took the lead 15-14. Sewell tied the score on the next end, but Adams fared better over the last three ends and took the win 20-16.

On Sunday 16 bowlers came along, and a game of pairs and two games of triples were played.

Peter Ryan and Noel Witney got off to a slow start against Glen Carter and Kathy Evans in the pairs game. Evans won the first six ends to lead 9-0. Witney then won five of the next seven ends and closed the gap to 2 shots. Evans scored a single on the last end to win 12-9.

Pauline Clark, Sue Murray and John Toole scored 8 shots over the first two ends against Kevin Dwyer, Ralph Parsons and Gary Nathan. Toole went on to lead 13-1 before Nathan made a comeback. Nathan outscored Toole 11-3 over the remaining ends but fell short, with Toole taking the win 16-12.

In the second triples game Ray Miller, Paul Rodenhuis and Susie Simmons played Ron McGarry, Robyn Adams and Leonie McGarry. Simmons led by a single shot after four ends, but McGarry scored 4 shots on each of the next three ends to have the advantage. McGarry was too good on the day, winning 31-12.

The slightly adverse weather conditions affected social bowls on both Tuesday and Wednesday this past week, with numbers down on Tuesday and Wednesday morning bowls washed out mid-morning.

In the first game on Tuesday Jake Shurmer, Jeff Adams and Paul Rodenhuis had a tight game against Ron Hogan, John Mackey and Brian Hope. Little separated the sides over the first fifteen ends and when Hope scored 3 shots on end sixteen, scores were level at 14 all. Hope scored the next 5 shots to have the advantage, but Rodenhuis scored a 4 on the penultimate end. Hope won the last end and finished up with a 20-18 win.

On Rink 3 Russell Deans, Kevin Dwyer and Mark McKean dominated the early ends against Graham Stocks, Ross Dransfield and Kevin Arrow. McKean led comfortably 16-3 after fourteen ends before Arrow won all but one of the last seven ends. However, McKean restricted Arrow to singles and McKean went on to win 19-10.

Ron Roberts, Colin Pickstone and Dan Rochfort were too good on the day for Rod Lorimer, John Bosson and Greg Hallett on Rink 4. Rochfort won the first four ends and although down by 6 shots after fifteen ends, Hallett was still in the game. Rochfort took the game away by winning the next five ends and recorded a 22-9 win.

Frank Brouwers played sw***er with Ron McGarry and Kevin Miller against Jim Clark and John Toole. Toole was well in control after nine ends, leading 10-2. Miller scored a 6 to get back in the game but only won two further ends in the game. Toole was too good, winning 18-10.

The final game was a pairs game where Terry Chifley and Tim Pickstone played Alan Clark and Gary Nathan. Pickstone was the better team and had a big lead 18-3 after fourteen ends. Nathan recovered to win their share of the remaining ends and outscored Pickstone 8-6, but it was a comfortable win to Pickstone 24-11.

When rain interrupted play on Wednesday morning, the following were the scores:

Val Zylstra and Kathy Evans led Betsy Thornberry and Vicki Weal 8-5.

Raylee Barnes, Gayle Howard (sw***er) and John Toole led Bill Howard, Gayle and Robyn Stenhouse 6-4.

Sally Colebatch, Sue Murray and Noel Witney led Pauline Clark, Kerry Lucas and Robyn Adams 7-5.

Judy Sharp and Gary Nathan led Rod Jones and Ray Miller 15-7.
