BHFNC - Thank You to Sam Schaller
The Barwon Heads Football Netball Club extends its deepest and most heartfelt thanks to Sam Schaller for a lifetime of service, passion and commitment to the blue and white.
Sam’s journey with the Seagulls began in the early to mid 1990s as a young Auskicker — a kid who fell in love with footy on the Village Park oval and never let go. From those first kicks, Sam grew into one of the most uniquely skilled footballers the club has produced. His kicking style was awkward, unconventional, unmistakable — and unbelievably effective. It was a technique that had to be seen to be appreciated, and even this season at training, it was still on show, still working, still pure Sam.
Across three decades, Sam has lived every part of the Barwon Heads pathway: junior player, senior player, junior coach, development coach, reserves coach, senior line coach, senior co coach and senior coach. Few people in our history have contributed across so many levels, for so long, with such impact.
His coaching record is exceptional — and importantly, premiership studded:
• Junior premiership involvement
• Development and reserves finals campaigns
• Senior premiership involvement in 2019 and 2022
• Multiple grand finals across juniors, reserves and seniors
• Leadership roles in interleague programs
• Senior coaching roles across five consecutive seasons
Sam has shaped players at every stage of their football life. He has mentored juniors, steadied development squads, driven reserves groups, and helped build senior programs that reflect the values we are proud of. His understanding of Barwon Heads — its people, its expectations, its pathway — is unmatched.
He has always loved this club more than anything — at least until Kate, and then Ivy, came along. His loyalty to the Seagulls and the Barwon Heads community has been unwavering, and his care for the jumper has never faltered.
As Sam steps into his next chapter, we hope it takes him on a learning curve toward bigger and better things. He has the intelligence, the passion, the resilience and the football mind to go as far as he chooses. The sky truly is the future for Sam.
Thank you, Sam. For the years, the effort, the passion, the wins, the heartbreaks, the development, the loyalty, and the love you’ve poured into the Barwon Heads Football Netball Club.

Barwon Heads FNC has officially opened Expressions of Interest for its 2027 football coaching team, covering Senior, Reserves, Under 18s and Under 16s. The club is highlighting its 100‑year history, strong junior pathway, community values, and the chance for coaches to shape the next era of Seagulls football. The call‑out focuses on leadership, culture, development, and collaboration — with applications closing 30 September 2026.

Barwon Heads Football Netball Club - Football Department Statement.

The Barwon Heads Football Netball Club wishes to advise members, players, supporters and stakeholders that following a comprehensive review of the club's football program, the Football Department has made the decision to undertake a full reset of the coaching structure for the 2027 season and beyond.

As part of this process, all coaching positions within the football program will be opened through an Expression of Interest process to ensure the club is best positioned for future success both on and off the field.

This decision follows extensive discussion, consideration of feedback received from across the football program, and a thorough assessment of the direction required to continue building a strong and sustainable future for the club.

The Club wishes to acknowledge and sincerely thank Senior Coach Sam Schaller for his outstanding contribution to Barwon Heads Football Netball Club. Sam's commitment, leadership and service to the club extends well beyond his time as Senior Coach and reflects a lifetime of dedication to the Seagulls.

The Football Department and Committee recognise the significant work undertaken by Sam and his coaching staff, and the positive impact they have had on the development of players and the broader football program. We remain incredibly grateful for everything they have contributed.

We also acknowledge the tremendous work undertaken by our Development and Junior coaching teams. The foundations that have been established across the club have positioned Barwon Heads strongly for future success, and those contributions are greatly valued and respected.

The Club will shortly invite Expressions of Interest for coaching positions across the football program. We encourage suitably qualified and passionate candidates to consider becoming part of the next chapter of Barwon Heads Football Netball Club.

While change can be difficult, the Football Department firmly believes this process is being undertaken in the best interests of the club and its long-term future.

The Barwon Heads Football Netball Club remains committed to building a football program that reflects our values, supports player development, promotes club culture and positions us for sustained success.

Barwon Heads Football Netball Club wishes to advise that Damian McMahon has stepped down from his position as Senior Men’s Co-Coach and will return to St Mary’s Football Club for the 2027 season. We thank Damo for his professionalism throughout the process and for his contribution to our senior program over past two seasons. The club has already commenced its coaching appointment process for 2027. Our senior playing group has been informed, and we are now progressing through a structured recruitment plan to ensure stability and continuity. We are excited to build on the success we enjoyed throughout the 2026 season, and with the opening of our new clubrooms in 2027, we look forward to strengthening our football program and providing an even better environment for our players, coaches and community. Further updates will be provided once the appointment process is complete.
