“BOYS WILL BE BOYS” 😡💔
It has taken me a while to write this as I have needed to remove the anger that I had attached to the conversation that lead to this.
That phrase should only EVER be applied to boys doing things like building BMX ramps and jumping their bikes or climbing trees and jumping into lakes or wrestling our mates in a paddock and ending up covered in mud (or cow s**t 🤣). Things like that. Things that boys will be boys….
Unfortunately I have had the heartbreak of being part of a conversation with one of the mothers of the kids in the kids Karate class recently where her 6yr old daughter had her throat grabbed by a boy in her class at her primary school. Last week she informed me that 2 other young girls were assaulted by other boys in the same class. One was shaken rather violently and the other had her hair grabbed and he then proceeded to slam her head into the desk.
I was absolutely disgusted to hear that a person in authority at that school ( yes here in Ballarat) told the mother that “boys will be boys”.
This should NEVER be used as an excuse or a justification of violence.
No one should ever feel scared to attend school. I was constantly bullied as a kid and I hated school. I am not oblivious to the reality that things will always happen and yes sometimes kids do things without understanding the consequences. That said as adults and members of society it is our responsibility to educate and guide our youth, as well as protecting them from this behaviour.
If any parent ever finds their daughters in this situation I would love to provide them with a place in our kids class.
Please don’t ever feel that there is nothing that can be done. We are all here to help and nurture our youth.
