What will the final weeks of netball look like for the player who has spent most of the season on the sideline?

As the season comes to an end, some players will finish feeling confident, valued and excited to return next year.

Others may finish wondering whether they are good enough to keep playing.

This is especially important in our community teams, where development, enjoyment and belonging should matter just as much as the result.

❌ The player who starts on the sideline every week NOTICES.

❌ They notice who is considered part of the “STRONG SEVEN”.

❌ They notice when they only get on court once the team is winning by ALOT

❌ They notice when ONE MISTAKE sends them straight back to the sideline

Even when nothing is said, the message can feel like they are not valued as team member.

So, what can coaches do in the final weeks?

If your team IS making finals 🏆

Give every player meaningful court time, enough time to settle, make decisions and work through mistakes.

Let players who usually sit off start a game.

Use the final rounds to prepare your whole team for finals, not only the seven players you trust the most.

Most importantly, give players specific feedback about what they are doing well and how they can contribute.

If your team is NOT making finals 🎖️

Use the remaining games to give players opportunities they may not have received during the season.

Give them a full game.

Allow them to try different positions.

Celebrate their effort, improvement, courage and willingness to keep trying.

These final weeks are an opportunity to remind players why they began playing netball in the first place.

At the end of the season, they may not remember the scores or where the team finished on the ladder.

They will remember whether they felt wanted☑️

They will remember whether they were trusted on court☑️

They will remember whether netball built their confidence or slowly took it away☑️

For some players, these final games may decide whether they register again next year☑️

Get them on court.

Let them find their feet.

Encourage them loudly.

Help them finish the season feeling proud, included and excited to come back.

Community netball should not only develop the strongest players.

It should help every young player believe there is a place for them in our game 🤍

The Junior Performance Academy has been designed to support players who are preparing for rep trials, wanting to develop their skills, or looking to feel more confident before they step onto the court.

Players will work through structured face-to-face sessions, personalised home training and mindset support to help them train with more purpose.
Academy includes:

✅ 8-9 weeks (up-to court 16 sessions)
✅ 8 x 90-minute face-to-face training sessions
✅ Personalised 8-week home training program
✅ School holiday court-specific sessions across Shooting, Midcourt and Defence (attend up-to 6 additional sessions)
✅ Access to the Player Training App with 100+ sessions

One thing you could do today…

It’s getting late in the season here in Australia.

Some teams will make finals… some won’t.

Some players have loved every minute… some have found this season challenging.

Some players will be back next year… some won’t.

No matter where your team is sitting on the ladder, let’s make these final weeks something players remember for all the right reasons.

Let’s create an environment where players finish the season feeling valued, encouraged and excited to come back next year, not counting down until it’s over.

🏐 As the COACH

➖Throughout the game, make a point of celebrating one thing each player does well - big or small. Confidence grows when effort is noticed.

➖Give Player of the Match to everyone. At the end of the game, tell each player one thing you were proud of them for today. Every player deserves to leave feeling seen.

➖No matter the result, tell your team how proud you are of them. Then celebrate together! Hand out a small treat, if each player can share one thing they were proud of themselves for during the game. Helping players recognise their own successes is a skill that lasts far beyond netball.

🏐 As the PARENT

➖Before the game, tell your child you’re excited to watch them play. If it’s true, let them know that watching them play is one of your favourite parts of the week.

➖During the game, be ready with a smile, a wink, a thumbs up or a heart with your hands whenever they look your way. Those little moments remind them they have someone in their corner, no matter what the scoreboard says.

These moments might seem small…

But years from now, players are far more likely to remember how you made them feel than what the final score was.
