It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of ASCC member Don Gibson.
Don has always been a committed rider and volunteer. But it was in the last couple of years, as he battled the horrors of chemo and cancer, that we really saw his true, brave, generous self.
He was always available to help with come and try events, races or training. Even when he was feeling ill, he still gave his best. And if he couldn't be present, he was on social media, commenting, supporting and cheering us on.
We will miss him so much. Our thoughts are with Therese and his family.

Social Gravel Ride Owen Springs 15th August 2026
How good was that?
Gravel, river crossings, sand, river rocks and brilliant views. Oh, and a bit of rain. And ever dropping temperatures.
The event started 2km off Larapinta Drive with the Waterhouse Ranges in view under a cloudy and dry sky. The riders set off spinning their legs with smiles on their faces. Bruce Owens was tail end Charlie in a useful car – bike rack & passenger seats available. (also, music and good company).
The support driver with super useful bus (Big Thanks to Alice Car Rental) and bike trailer, drove at a steady speed through increasing rain along South Stuart Highway, turned onto the Owen Springs Reserve access road. And stopped. Red dirt plus rain = STOP. Oh well the riders would have to ride a little bit longer.
As the riders started arriving, looking a bit cold and very wet it was quickly decided that lunch would be a shared meal back in the Clubrooms. But Kathy didn’t miss out on the cold wet experience, as she jumped on her bike to ride out to the last riders and es**rt them back to a warm bus. Luckily Kathy had perfect clothing for the ride and never got cold.
In the bus with excellent heating and safe from the continuing rain, towing a bike filled trailer (mountain bikes take up way more room than sleek road bikes) cyclists headed happily to shelter and warmth, camaraderie and coffee, and home for hot showers. (although a couple of riders utilised the excellent facilities at the Clubrooms)
Thanks everyone for a fun day and let’s look for more gravel rides next year.

Glen Helen Gran Fondo 8th August 2026
Who won – the north westerly wind.
The initial joy of not such a cold day with some nice cloud cover was lost amongst the angst of the headwind. The splash of rain mid event had some cooling happiness but that didn’t last.
Five riders started at Flynn’s Grave. Three riders completed 126km (approx.) to the Mt Sonder Lookout, two riders were creative and made it to the finish (on their bikes). Two riders joined at Hugh River (one fresh off the plane from Darwin) and had very different experiences and the fastest rider (km/hr) rode the shortest distance (and his longest race/ride).
See below for detailed results.
A long lunch of salty chips, fresh salads, breads, cold meats, cheese, banana bread AND cold sugar rich drinks was enjoyed by all riders, support crews and volunteers, with views of Mt Sonder, Two Mile and across to Glen Helen.
Big thanks to Bec Schultz and Trish Gaff for excellent support with ready supplies, happiness at driving behind riders and the mental support required by everyone. Thanks to Tom Simonson for supporting Sven in achieving the fastest average for the day! And thanks to Reg Hatch for being the course photographer.
