Gโ€™Day All!
Anyone would think that it was spring, perfect sunshine and no wind for our 440th Parkrun event.

This week 107 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 27 were first timers and 10 recorded new personal bests. Representatives of 8 different clubs took part.

We had visitors from the UK, Geelong, Largs, Moana and Happy Valley.

Well, I tumble outta bed and stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
Yawn and stretch and grab the parkrun gear
โ€ฆ
Jump in the Tesla and get the tunes pumping
Hit the highway, the trafficโ€™s not yet jumping
Only folks like me on the parkrun drive
โ€ฆ
Running parkrunโ€™s 5, what a way to keep up fitness
Barely getting by, it's all grit with no forgiveness
You abuse your mind, and your lungs wonโ€™t give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
โ€ฆ
Sprinting parkrunโ€™s 5, you've got passion and a vision
'Cause it's PB time, a whole new way to keep your fitness
Gonna change your life, do something that gives it meaning
With a finish that is worthy of your dreamin'
โ€ฆ
Well, you got dreams and you know they matter
Time to volunteer, help the Run Director
That milestoneโ€™s getting closer by the week
And you're in the same boat with a lotta parkies
Reaching goals you all believe in
The milestone shirtโ€™s already posted, and itโ€™d better fit my hips
โ€ฆ
Walking parkrunโ€™s 5, making paces of your own now
And it feels so fine to build your strength from nothing
Gonna move ahead, and there's nothing gonna stop you
When you listen to that little voice inside you
โ€ฆ
Yeah, parkrunโ€™s 5, you've got passion and a vision
'Cause it's movinโ€™ time, a whole new way to up your fitness
Gonna change your life, do something that gives it meaning
With a parkrun style that is worthy of your dreaming

Cairns Park run was such a fun and uplifting experience! The course was beautiful and not too complicated, with tropical greenery all around; even though it was raining it was still beautiful, and that fresh morning feeling made it all worth it.

Walking alongside the trees and open spaces made it feel less like a race and more like a little adventure. What I loved most about it was the community, everyone was so encouraging and welcoming whether they were running, walking, volunteering, or cheering from the side.

There was such a positive energy in the air, and it was impossible not to feel happy being shown by people who were all there to enjoy themselves and support each other. Cairns Park run reminded me that you don't have to be the fastest or the strongest to be part of something amazing sometimes it's just about showing up, having fun, and enjoying the moment.

Ending (or starting!) the day with smiles on people's faces as they cross the finish line at parkrun. No matter how fast or slow they've gone, there's a real sense of pride, happiness and achievement. The tired faces quickly turn into big smiles, as everyone celebrates what they've accomplished and enjoys being part of such a positive and welcoming community. Have a great day!

~13 newbies decided to check what all the fuss was about

'day, Aldinga Beach parkrunners! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I have spoken casually to many of you about a proposed change to our Event and I thought that this might be the right time to "put it out there" publicly.

Over the past six months, I have come to the conclusion that - as an Event - we need to "evolve" to help us more efficiently process the larger attendance numbers we experience during the Summer months.

Call me a "stats nerd" if you must but here's what the 2025/6 facts & figures show:
โฑ๏ธNon-Summer avg. attendance 2025 = 103
โฑ๏ธSummer avg. attendance 2025/6 = 154
โฑ๏ธSeasonal increase = 50%
โฑ๏ธSix of our Top 10 attended events occurred during the 25/26 Summer period

That last point was what got me thinking. Delving deeper and looking at figures from the last 3 years, figures show that the projection* is that we will average 170 participants over the summer of 2026/7.
(*Projection only)

My new co-Event Director, Ruth Battersby, and I have come to the conclusion that our current Start/Finish line setup is not "fit for purpose" without significant alterations (rubble clearance, turfing, etc.) that would be required to be approved, carried-out, and maintained (i.e., irrigation) by the landowner, the City of Onkaparinga.

So... after in-depth discussions with the Core Team (Event Directors & Run Directors), as well as with many regular participants, we have come to the conclusion that we can "repurpose" the current course and better accommodate increasing attendance numbers by relocating the Start/Finish line to Snapper Point, which - as all locals will know - is about 1.8 kilometres to the north of the current Start/Finish line.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU:
โž•The event will start with participants running southwards from Snapper Point to the "old" Start/Finish line, where they will carry out their first turnaround;
โž•Participants head northwards to the currently-existing turnaround point, at which point;
โž•Participants head back to the Start/Finish line.

As we see it, there are other benefits to this change - to us as an Event and to all participants:
โž•Toilet facilities within 25 metres. (Currently 250 metres away)
โž•Human & canine drinking facility within 25 metres. (Currently N/A)
โž•Playground on-site for spectators with children. (Currently N/A)
โž• 30+ car parks (Currently 14)
โž•2 Disabled car parks (Currently 1)
โž•Plenty of on-road parking at Start/Finish Line. (Currently 50 metres away)

Here is a link to the repurposed course layout: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/474511826

The City of Onkaparinga have approved the changes, as have parkrun Australia. We just need to sort out a few "nuts & bolts" with the Event Support team.

We are planning for the change to take effect from October 3, 2026.

If you have any questions, feel free to respond to this post or ask me in person.

John Marketis

NOW WE ARE NINE!

In this report, our Run Director & co-Event Director, John Marketis, speaks from the point-of-view of a 9-year-old - something we are sure he does in daily life!
Please keep in mind that his personal life-philosophy is:
"You're only young once... but you can be immature FOREVER!"

WHAT A DAY! Today, ninety-five people came to our party!
Ninety-five! That's an awful lot of people for a birthday party. I don't think I've ever had ninety-five people at one of my birthdays before. Mind you, they didn't all sit down and have cake at the same time. They played their favourite party game of getting around the course first. And - because it was the 22nd of the month - lots of people wore Tutus! (2-2, geddit?)

ABSOLUTE FIRST TIMERS
I thought it was pretty good that 3 others had never attended a parkrun birthday party before, so I think I need to mention them especially:
Shannon, Lia, and Kornelija. It was lovey to see you there!

VISITORS
Fourteen people who were at our party for the very first time. Visitors arrived from New South Wales, Torrens Park, Victor Habor, and Goolwa (all SA). We even had visitors from Dulwich parkrun in London, England! It was great to have you all there!

PERSONAL BESTS
Six people even managed to do the course faster than they'd ever done it before. They called those their Personal Bests. I'm not exactly sure why you'd want to run faster on your birthday, but I suppose it gives you something to be proud of!
WELL DONE to: Richard, Sophia, Archie, Lyn, Sarah, and Heather!

There were people from six different clubs there, too.
I didn't know there were that many clubs, but apparently there are.

VOLUNTEER MILESTONE
KIRSTY ATKINSON performed her 100th Volunteer Event
WELL DONE, KIRSTY!

And then, of course, there was the cake. Well... there wouldn't really be a birthday party without cake, would there?

There were sixteen grown-ups who helped make everything work properly:

Emma Steel
Dale Grimmond
John Marketis
Prashanth Balasubramaniam
Robert Evans
Ornella Camplin (Cake Maker)
Kirsty Atkinson
Ruth Battersby
Simon Pearce
Monique Pearce
Michelle Elin
Sue Camac (Pavement Artiste)
Fiona Koutas
Dev Hasan
Glenda Logan
Stewart Glass

THANK YOU ALL!
They did all sorts of important jobs while the rest of us were having fun. Somebody had to make sure everyone knew where to go, somebody had to keep track of the times, somebody had to hand out the finish tokens and somebody had to make sure the whole thing happened safely.
That's a lot of people to organise just for one birthday party!

And if every birthday party has ninety-five people, sixteen helpers, seventeen newcomers, six Personal Bests and people running, jogging and walking all over the place... I reckon nine is going to be a very good age.

Our favourite coffee shop - Goodness Coffee Co - in Aldinga are such good people, they provided free coffees to all of our grown-up helpers... and they were very disappointed that there was no cake left for them!

I'm nine now. I suppose that means I'm getting pretty old. Next year I'll be ten, which sounds very grown-up indeed. But for now, I'm happy being nine. Next year's party will be in a brand new location... watch for the news!
