Enormous congratulations to our Magnificent U14JPL Coach Tom Commins! When Tom is not being awesome at Dodgers with our U14 JPL Boys or our Senior Premier League men and U19 JPL Boys, he’s coaching the ACT U16 Boys Nationals team.

Well done on leading these young men on their National’s journey! We’re so happy to see your amazing capacity as a coach getting recognised on a National level!

Hello!

As many of you know, the Weston Creek Woden Dodgers have been working hard behind the scenes to rebuild our women's basketball program, and I wanted to share some of the exciting progress we've made.

Over the past few months, we've been focused on creating a strong foundation for the future. This hasn't just been about recruiting players—it's been about identifying strategies, and planning a program and a culture that our women can be proud to be part of.

Some of the steps we've taken include:

1. Meeting with experienced and passionate female coaches committed to developing both individuals and teams. Keep an eye on the socials for Coach announcements.
2. Continuing to build a positive, inclusive and supportive club culture where everyone feels valued.
3. Actively promoting women's basketball across the Canberra community - celebrating the achievements of our female athletes and coaches, sponsoring female athletes and coaches to attend player and coach development, including the National Coaches Conference and Caps camps.
4. Developing a long-term vision that puts women's basketball at the heart of our club - Wear it Red Round to contribute to safe sporting environments for women, Share the Dignity partnership and developing pathways for players to continue to engage with basketball after their time as a player (Coaching, Refereeing, Officiating, Administrating)
5. Researching the barriers that prevent women from engaging with basketball and planning strategies to remove these barriers - Weekly training with the team PLUS flexible court availability for those weeks that athletes just can't make regular team training because of family, study, work commitments and... well...life 😉, game day "CourtSide Eyes" service, this is where a couple of U16/U19 athletes are rostered to attend games and keep their eyes on the small future ballers that tag along with Mum/Dad (allowing Parents to be there and just enjoy the game) and a toy box at training to keep small ballers occupied.
6. Facilitating employment opportunities through our sponsor relationships.

While we're proud of the progress we've made, we know that the strength of any club comes from its people. Many have played an important role in the history of the Dodgers, and we'd love to see current and former Dodgers back in the red and black in 2027.

Our goal isn't simply to field teams—we want to build a women's program that is competitive, welcoming, sustainable and something everyone is proud to be part of.

If you know friends who might also be interested, we'd really appreciate you sharing this with them. Every player helps us continue building something special and we'd love to be on everyone's radar when they are considering the best playing environment for themselves for the 2026 Summer Open season and the 2027 SPL seasons.

Please message the club on Facebook or email [email protected] if you'd like more information. 2027 SPL Trials will be held in December and Febuary. Keep an eye on the Socials for details.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Dodgers. We hope to see many familiar faces back on court this Summer to relaunch Dodgers Women 🙌

Go Dodgers!
