2026 WOMENS SENIOR SUMMER OPEN COACH ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!

We are super excited to welcome back to Dodgers the amazing Coach and Player Kandis Ivas Duncan who will be leading our Senior Summer Open Women this year!!

A lifelong basketballer, she first picked up a ball at age eight and developed through Queensland’s junior pathways with the Spartans and Brisbane Bullets. She progressed into senior competition through Basketball Queensland, spending several years in the Premier League with the Postels, while also earning referee qualifications and officiating social and premier-level games.

After joining the ADF in 2008, she quickly stepped into representative basketball in 2009. A critical neck injury that year forced her away from the court until 2011, but she returned to compete in both the QBL and ADF representative system, earning selection in the National ADF team, which toured Western Australia in 2012.

Defence postings later took her to Newcastle, where she continued playing senior social and premier competition and represented the Newcastle Hunters in the Waratah League before relocating to Canberra.
She joined Woden City Dodgers’ Prem 2 women’s program in 2020 and, following a serious knee injury in 2024, turned her experience and resilience toward coaching. She coached the Dodgers Prem 2 Summer Open side to victory in 2024 and returned in 2025, after further injury sustained during the 2025 Grand Final victory and aggravated in ADF representative basketball ruled her out of playing. The injury has likely brought her playing career to a medical close, making the shift to coaching inevitable.

Her connection to the game remains strong through Defence Basketball. She is a key Executive member of the Australian Defence Force Basketball Association and has served as its Director of Administration for 14 years. In 2025, she also attained Club Level coaching qualifications through Basketball ACT.

Drawing on decades of playing, officiating, representative, Defence and administrative experience, she is looking forward to continuing to develop her coaching capability and helping players grow in the game.

U14 BOYS SUMMER OPEN/JPL COACH ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

DAVE RUSSELL

For many years now, Dodgers have maintained a close relationship with Coach Dave Russell. As with many of our Coaches, this relationship spans many years (and sometimes decades) and our firm connection to the Russell family is no exception to that.

Dave has been coaching basketball for the last 10 years and currently holds the Association Coach credentials in basketball, as well as the Development Coach (level 2) credentials in athletics. He has coached both boys and girls over the 10 years, and has coached primarily at the JPL level - winning three seasons. David has also coached the U16 girls age group in the ACT representative program.

Dave played multiple sports and represented the ACT on a number of occasions while competing at the Australian Championships in both Australian Rules Football and Athletics - high jump.

When coaching, Dave prioritised fundamentals early on so that athletes develop the skills needed to optimise their success as players, with a firm understanding of the importance of both defence and offence as integral parts of the game. The view that “offence brings the crowd, defence brings the championship” is front and centre in Dave’s coaching.

Dave always makes training and games a safe, supportive and fun environment and encourages his players to be comfortable in making mistakes, knowing that mistakes are an important part of sport that helps us to learn, adapt and develop resilience.
