The Goals are costume made of stainless steel, we placed them at the bottom of the pool in both sides of the playing area. The rubber ball we use to play is filled with salt water, so it's neutrally buoyant, it can be thrown and travels for a couple of meters before it sinks.
A couple of rules related
1. Can't hold from the goal to score or defend.
2. Don't take the ball out of the water, that's fault.
3. If you have the ball you can be tackled, if you don't want to be grabbed let the ball go.

PLAYERS
Six players in the water per team (2 Forwards/Attackers, 2 Goalies/Goalkeepers, 2 Backs/Defenders) playing with a buddy system.
An average of 20 seconds underwater at a time and a fast recovery (3 breaths). Six aditional players outside ready to substitute.
The idea is to keep possession of the ball and outwit your opponents by using skill, speed, maneuverability and breath hold.
All players participate on the defence and attack on a dynamic way.

Hi everyone and welcome to Underwater Rugby Whitsundays.
I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Nat, a Colombian-Australian Underwater Rugby player and President of the Club. I founded the Victoria Seadragons Underwater Rugby Melbourne in 2014, which is now a very successful club. Training regularly and participating and hosting competitions all year round.
I had the honor to represent Australia in the last two World Championships (Colombia 2015, Austria 2019) and the Victoria Seadragons in the Champions Cup (Berlin 2018 and 2022) which is the second biggest competition of the world, dedicated to the champions of each Nation.
I moved to the Whitsundays two years ago and I want to share my experience and dedication to the sport and have some fun underwater.
The Underwater Rugby community in Australia is great and they are waiting for us. So take a risk and get on board!

So who plays Underwater Rugby?
People from all ages and backgrounds. Students, lots of engineers, biologists, environmentalists, doctors, nurses, designers... ex Rugby Union players, AFL players that had injuries in the past, ex competitive swimmers, freedivers, spear fishers... Anyone that is crazy or brave enough to try something new 🙂
Strength, speed, agility or good teamplay are all similarly important.

POSITIONS
Forward/Attacker
Our sprinters, they are fast and agile. Also called "ball stealer", constantly looking for the opportunity to recover the ball and start an attack.
Back/Defender
Some of our phisically stronger players. They stop the attack from the opposite team and protect the goalie. Often break the defence of the opposite team, doing a fake attack to open space for the team to score.
Goalie/Goalkeeper
Lies on top of the basket to block open attacks on the goal. They are calm, patient, can really hold there breath. Often start counterattacks when recovering the ball at the goal.
