Shu Ha Ri (守破離)
is a traditional Japanese concept describing the three stages of acquiring knowledge and reaching mastery.
Originating in martial arts like aikido and tea ceremonies, it translates to: follow the rules, break the rules, and transcend the rules.
The Three Stages of Learning
Shu (守) — Protect / Obey: Learn the fundamentals, techniques, and strict rules from a single master or tradition. Copy the form precisely without deviation.
Ha (破) — Detach / Break: Experiment, break free from rigid rules, and understand the underlying principles. Learn from other mentors and adapt techniques.
Ri (离) — Leave / Transcend: Leave behind fixed forms. Act naturally and creatively based on deep, personal practice, eventually becoming an innovator or master.

Mark the dates!
Shifting your bodyweight is kinetically expensive, in both power and time. Especially for heavier Karateka.
So change your base without waiting for your bodyweight to catch up, so you can change directions quicker.
Your body will lag behind and will change directions much slower than your stance work, but so long as your body shifted out of range and then back into range sufficiently to both avoid and counter, you're good.
Naka Shihan explains it from a turning your body perspective as well, which is likely the easier way to understand the practical steps.
