Kapunda Golf Club Weekly Report

Firstly I would like to congratulate all of the riders and passengers who managed to complete the 24hr trial in very ordinary cold, wet and muddy conditions. You all certainly deserve the medal! Well done to all.
Winter was still with us last week with some cold, wet and windy weather greeting players during their rounds on Thursday and Saturday. It was a bit of light relief for the ladies on the Wednesday albeit it was pretty cold.
They had a good turnout of 8 pairs for the first round of their Club Foursomes which also qualified for the statewide Shylie Rymill Foursomes. The standout team was that of Carolyn Koch and Pam May who won the day with a good score of 100/75. Sue Siviour and Judy Vandeleur also combined well for 108/76.5 in second place. The overworked and under paid Captain FORGOT to put out the NTP’s on the day so nothing to report there! 😔
Maybe Kazz had that on her mind as her and partner Jenny took 5 shots to get off the beach on the 4th hole on their way to a nice round dozen on the hole. Hopefully no such issues this week for the second round.
Thursday was another nice cold day for the good field of 53 players who took to the course in the stableford round.
Rusty must have had the clubs humming when he carded a fantastic 41 points to win the day and the A grade. With 32 putts he obviously hit a lot of greens. Craig Palmer came a long way from his previous outing of taking home the eggs to winning the C grade with an impressive 40 points. Previous visitor and now new member Richard Hollands won the B grade with a very nice 39 points. He will be playing with a shot less on his handicap this week after that great effort.
Kiwi continued his consistently good form with 39 points as well. Youngster Tyler Johnson made the most of the school holiday break to come in with 38 points on his 9 handicap while the group of Willow, Morry Woods, Dean Butler and Fatty Allen all played well for 37 points apiece. Pete Edwards and Phill Koschella also played to their handicaps.
NTP’s went to Dave Cochrane on the 6th, Willow on the longer 15th and Steven Peter on the 18th. Richard also picked up a ball for the best front nine of 21 points and Rusty just knocked off Craig in a countback for the back nine prize with 22 points. John Dickie had a day he would rather forget, not being able to reach either of the above winners for the full eighteen holes. A week is a long time in golf John!
Dennis Miller had one birdie and six pars for the day but was lucky to jag the birdie on the 10th hole which was drawn out as the jackpot hole. A nice little cash pickup to cover some of the subs. Well done Dennis.
Saturday was forecast to be another cold, windy and sometimes wet day which would be better suited to ducks rather than golfers or motor bike riders in the 24hr trial.
The field of 66 hardy souls who teed off had some pretty tough conditions to deal with, particularly the late starters for a change.
One of the first off the tee as soon as it got almost light enough was Troy Sires and he put together a magnificent round of +5 to win the second round of the Hayward Family Memorial Trophy quite comfortably. Despite being four over after three holes (perhaps because he couldn’t see the ball clearly) a back nine of two over the card certainly helped his cause. There were only two players in the black with the other being Jenny Menzel with +2 which was enough to win the C grade, also quite comfortably from Pam May on -1. Rodney Buckley swapped spots with Pam from the previous week to finish third in the grade with -2 in a countback with Brian Sneddon.
Mal Chomik remained out of the red along with Big Show with their scores of square leading the A grade. Mal took the win in the countback after Big Show double bogied the last. It was also a countback for the last minor placing with Matty Cotton just beating Pratty with his +3 on the back nine getting him back from 4 down at the turn.
The B grade saw Hollis back up his form from the previous week to come in on -1 and a one shot lead over money man Dennis Miller. Julie Holland won a three way countback for third spot on -3 to match Rodney’s third placing.
The Prince of Wales NTP’s were collected by Rocket Ellis on the 6th and Chris Lambert on the 15th and the Clare Castle cash on the 18th was held all day by Mick Hennessy. Jayden Higgins won the Reillys Wines 2nd shot NTP Bottle Red Wine. Michael Pratt won the A grade long drive. It was obviously a better tee shot than that on the third hole which saw the wind push it across a couple of fairways into the bunker on the first. A great recovery from there though to card a bogey! Tom Neidorfer won the B grade and big hitting Rodney the C grade. Pam May picked up some extra cash for her drive to beat the other girls.
If anyone knows who keeps pinching the sand bucket out of the barrel on the 2nd tee block can you suggest they grab a different one so that players can use the one there to repair divots on the tee block. They even took one without a handle a couple of weeks ago! 😡
Thursday this week is Xmas in July with a near full field of 60+ players so grab your loud shirt and come out for a bit of fun, a great feed and the chance to win a a golf bag in the lucky numbers.
Saturday will be a Stableford round for the Mick McCarthy’s Kapunda Diesel Repair Diesel Repairs prize.
The weather looks promising all week to be precipitation free so hopefully there will be some great scores to report on next week.
Good golfing all.

On a sad note, the Kapunda Golf Club extends its deepest sympathy to Julie Hancock and family on the passing of Rob.

Rob was a valued member of our golfing community, a regular golfer on Thursdays and Saturdays, and a familiar face around the club. He also generously volunteered his time on Tuesdays mowing the greens, making a significant contribution to the course and the enjoyment of fellow members.

Rob's friendship, dedication, and presence will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed by everyone at the Kapunda Golf Club.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Julie and the family at this difficult time.

Thank you to the Hayward family for sponsoring today's par event.
Congratulations to Troy Sires who carded a +5 in some very ordinary conditions especially for the afternoon players

Kapunda Golf Report

Before I get into the results I would just like to mention a Tic-Toc video posted by joogiegolf which has given the Club some very good and free advertising. This lad is planning to play every golf course in the country and made Kapunda only his fifth stop and was full of praise for everyone involved in maintaining the course. For those who are not on social media I suggest you find a way to watch it as it is very worthwhile. It can be found on the Club’s page. For those who have seen it I’m sure you will be of the same opinion.
Ok, on to the golf. Huey dealt up another week of winter weather with the worst of it coming in Wednesday when the girls were about half way through their round. The thunder, lightning and rain blowing in sideways saw the skipper call it quits with the practice putting green under water. I think they found it much more comfortable in the Clubhouse. Better luck this week ladies.
Thursday was forecast to be not much better and the field was reduced to just 28 starters. Most of the field managed to miss the late rain but some got caught in it in the last couple of holes with a group deciding to pull the pin. The scores of those who finished were indicative of the tough conditions with only Terry Harris getting anywhere near playing to his handicap with 36 points. The next best score was 33 points and was the leading score in both A and C grades with Bazz Kalleske and Darrell Davies leading those two grades respectively. Keithy Earwood also carded 33 and the group of Kiwi, Seds Jnr, Boris and Richard Schulz all came in with 32. The NTP’s went to Con Haagmans on the 6th, Bazz on the 15th and Harris on the 18th. Terry also had the best front nine score of 20 points while Steve McInnes stole the back nine with 18 points.
Saturday was another bitterly cold start and it didn’t improve much as the day wore on. The field of 80 starters for the Total Earthworx Monthly Medal also struggled to master the conditions with very little run on the fairways.
The exception was Hollis Hayward who played very well for the winning score of 87/70. More evidence of the “left handers course” theory with Doc Carson finding some form to win the A grade with 80/72 and Con Haagmans the B grade with 89/75. In the top grade there were three other players tied on nett 73 vying for the other two podium spots. In the countback that man Kiwi took second spot ahead of Cougar which left Chris Lambert the unlucky loser.
In the B grade Cam Lord and Howie Jacques were just a shot behind Con and Cam grabbed second spot in the countback. A three way countback was required in the C grade to decide the top placings with Rodney Buckley carding one of his best rounds at the Club to relegate Pam May and Rob Claxton to the minor placings. All three finished with nett 75’s. Not only was it Rodney’s best round but it was also the first time he has beaten Jules off the stick (by a solitary stroke) which was certainly mentioned in the Clubhouse after the round.
The Prince of Wales NTP’s were collected by Tim Scheer on the 6th and Clive Shelbourn on the 15th. The Clare Castle prize went to Kiwi. For the second week running Pete Collins picked up the Reilly’s Wines NTP for the closest second shot, this time on the 3rd hole. On Saturday it was actually an approach shot rather than a putt like the previous week when he drove the 11th green. Long drive cash went to Simon Marsden, Cam, the day’s sponsor Mark Launer and Julie in their respective grades.
The trick shot of the day came from Mark after his tee shot on the 7th cannoned into the concrete plinth on the 16 and rebounded back over his head into the sand bucket at the 7th tee. I suspect he took a free drop for his next shot. Not something you want to try at home!
It was decided to have a crack at running a Sunday comp and a field of 30 keen starters took the opportunity to get in some more practice. Could work well for those six day members looking for a competition hit. It was a nice day and Bully Higgins (another south paw) carded an impressive 38 points to win the A grade on the day. Rowdy Richardson won the B grade with 35 and Rodney backed up his previous day’s effort with 34 points in the C grade.
Others to play well were Rob Denti and Craig Morrison (TTG) on 37, Simon Byrne (BGC) on 36 and twilight regular Connor Browne with 35. Craig also had a great day with his irons picking up both NTP’s on the 6th and 18th. It is planned to maybe try a Sunday comp once a month to see how it goes so keep it in mind if you are interested.
On Monday a couple of local Vets ventured to the scrapes of Owen for a hit with Kiwi, Pegs and Dean Butler each earning themselves a ball.
I haven’t had a rant for some time so I am back on the bandwagon about repairing divots out on the course. They have certainly been more noticeable over the past couple of weeks with some that large you have to wonder how people could miss them! Please show some respect for the course and fellow competitiors and repair any you leave and/or happen to see.
Also, in this extremely wet weather please keep your motorised carts off of the fairways to avoid leaving ruts and damaging tyre marks. Walk to your ball from the edge of the fairway if necessary. Thanks.
This week the women will be playing the first round of the Club Foursomes (also the Shylie Rymill), hopefully with a partner they get on with!
Thursday will be the regular stableford and Saturday will mix it up with a par comp as the second round of the Hayward Family Memorial trophy.
Saturday will also see the adjacent car park chock a block with Dutton Park being the starting point for the annual 24hr motorbike trial so be on your best behaviour off the first tee and keep the ball inside the pine trees 😂.
Hopefully some warmer and drier weather for this weeks golf.
Happy golfing all.

Teed Off.
