Grading Test- June 2026

One-step sparring is a key requirement in the First Taekwondo black belt examination. It demonstrates a student's understanding of realistic self-defence, timing, distance, control, balance, and correct technique. Unlike free sparring, one-step sparring assumes that a single decisive technique can end a confrontation, requiring the practitioner to react quickly and effectively.

Here is a brief video of successful 2nd Dan Applicant, Anthony, from Senior Instructor Carl's West Croyden Gym, demonstrating his techniques in 1 Step sparring, to form part of his exam.

Self-defence training in Taekwondo teaches students how to protect themselves, build confidence, and respond calmly in dangerous situations. It develops awareness, quick reactions, and the skills needed to escape safely.

Knife defence training highlights the importance of awareness, avoidance, and escaping whenever possible. It teaches that the safest response to a knife threat is to avoid confrontation, create an opportunity to get away.

Here is a brief video of Anthony, demonstrating his Knife and Self Defence techniques, as part of his 2nd Dan exam.

Patterns, are a fundamental part of Taekwondo training. They are a series of offensive and defensive movements performed in a set sequence, allowing students to practise techniques against imaginary opponents. Patterns help develop balance, coordination, flexibility, and correct body mechanics while improving accuracy and precision.

Here is a brief video of successful 2nd Dan Applicant, Anthony, from West Croyden Gym, demonstrating his patterns to form part of his exam.
