NAPGC Estimates Report
The North Adelaide Public Golf Course project was examined in State Parliament today as part of the annual Budget Estimates Committee Hearings, where MPs can interrogate any Minister on current and future expenditure listed in the State Budget.
The Premier, as Minister responsible for the project, responded to questions from the Leader of the Opposition.
The key points from the session:
1. The $45 million project cost is capital investing expenditure for the construction of the redesigned course.
2. The $45m does not include costs for a new clubroom. Work on design and costing for the clubroom is continuing, and when approved, will be made public.
3. Timelines: the earthworks component started in time for completion and use as a tournament venue by March 2028, based on the need for two growing seasons to ensure required quality of the course. The clubroom (design and location) and driving range are subject to the same timeline, with work completion expected by the end of 2027.
4. Part of the work on the clubroom and driving range revolves around the requirement that those facilities be able to generate year-round revenue streams to ensure that the entire facility is not a cost burden to the taxpayer in the same way that it was a cost burden for Adelaide City Council (noting that Council's budget papers showed it continually made a loss).
5. The decision to build a new clubroom was based on cost-consultants' assessments that renovation of the old (and dilapidated) clubroom was cost-prohibitive compared to a new build.
6. Trees. The Premier gave an update on the removal of trees to date and the final impact of the project as follows:
• The course precinct has more than 9,000 trees, of which 585 were identified for removal on the basis of being either necessary for the new design, or were an invasive or inappropriate species.
Of the 585, 111 were exempt from regulation as being invasive or inappropriate.
215 were smaller than the height required to be classified as a regulated tree; and 259 were either regulated or significant.
• The assumption that all 585 were native, significant and regulated is wrong.
• Around 400 of the 585 have been removed, representing the trees required to be moved for the new course area. The remainder are dependent on the final location of the clubroom and driving range.
• With a tree replacement program as part of the project, it is estimated that by the time the project is finished, there will be more than 10,000 trees on the site. All of these 10,000 will be native and/or appropriate to the course and provide an improved biodiversity for the area, including the wildlife.
A full transcript of the session will be released early next week through Hansard.
North Adelaide Golf Club
North Adelaide Golf Club (NAGC) is the home club at the North Adelaide Public Golf Course. The Club was formed in the 1890’s and built the original golf course.
It was formally incorporated as the North Adelaide Golf Club in 1904. It later partnered with the Adelaide City Council to establish an 18-hole South Course with Council as the landholder and the Club as lease-holder. In the 1960s the 18-hole North Course was added to the complex. NAGC is acknowledged as the oldest golf club in Australia still using its original site. It was one of the first clubs

Se Young Jung wins and aces at Seniors OOM
North Adelaide’s reigning Women’s Champion, Se Young Jung, has made a spectacular debut, winning the Senior Order of Merit event played at Mount Osmond on Monday 15 June.
In conditions made challenging by wind, rain and fog, Se Young carded the best women’s gross score of 82 (nett 73), AND ALSO recorded a hole-in-one at the 125-metre par 3, fourth hole:
“It was playing (more like)145 metres, and because of all the rain, I hit a 5-hybrid,” Se Young said.
“The two players I was with, and I were all watching it, saying, ‘Oh, that might go in!’
“We kept our eyes on it the whole way, and all three of us saw the ball disappear into the hole.
“The pin was right at the back, so I kept yelling, "Sit! Sit!" hoping it would stop, but it ended up dropping in anyway!”
It was her first ace in competition across 13 years of golf, which included three others in practice! And after a solid 3&2 win for her club in Public Course Pennants yesterday, she backed up with the best score in her first Seniors OOM on a day best spent under the doona.
“The last four holes were unbelievable — the fog was so thick we could barely see a thing! But it turned out to be a pretty special day,” she said.
“Everyone was curious about which club I was from, and I was very proud to say North Adelaide!”
Se Young is a 4-time women’s champion for North Adelaide and a star in our pennants teams. We could not be prouder of one of North Adelaide’s finest champions and ambassadors on one of the greatest days of her golfing career .
Congratulations, Se Young Jung!

Sunday 14 June - Public Course Pennants – Round 4
Two North Adelaide sides were on the road this week, as Divisions 2 and 3 trekked down the freeway to the old Marion Park, now known as Seacliff. Division 1 held the fort at home, hosting Sandy Creek.
Division 1 (Amended)
A halved round at home to second-placed Sandy Creek, but a finals berth is still on offer for North Adelaide.
Wins to Se Young Jung (3&2), Atila Koca (1up) and Yungbok Kim (3&2) had them in contention all the way to the end, but those wins were offset by as many losses. Squared matches to Joe Scriva and Chantha Kong could not tip the balance in the home side’s favour.
While the last two games of the minor round remain ‘must win’ assignments for our team, a third place on the ladder will still be good enough for a start in the qualifying semi-final.
Division 2
Top of the ladder when they started and still top of the ladder when they finished. North Adelaide racked up its 4th win from four matches with a handy 5-3 result at Seacliff.
Wins to Damwon Kim (5&4), John O’Connor (1up) and Mi Park (5&4) in the first two groups laid the foundation, while Luis Madriz (3&2) and Luc De Guia (1 up) made sure their Friday practice rounds at Seacliff paid off, by securing the win.
With 12 points from the 12 on offer and 55 holes won, these Red Shirts are indeed a formidable outfit.
Division 3
A top-of-the-table clash to open the second half of the minor round, and despite a close 4.5 to 3.5 loss at Seacliff, North Adelaide remains well in the hunt for a finals spot.
Every North Adelaide player had to give at least 4 strokes to their opponents under the handicap matchplay provisions, which made the first two results all the more extraordinary.
Playing at 8 and 7 respectively as the first pair out, Brett Heaven (2&1) and Darryl Treasure (1up) both recorded close and tenacious wins… with Brett giving 9 strokes to his opponent and Darryl offering up 11 strokes.
Four close losses in the middle groups put the win beyond reach, but a healthy 5&3 win to Kamal Haider and a squared match for Zak Baig ensured our team percentages remain superior to Seacliff’s despite trailing them by two points on the ladder.
Next week, all three sides travel to Regency Park for Round 5.
Good luck to all...

Life goes on.
Just as competition golf continues on the 13-hole North Course, our hard-working and dedicated Council staff have moved out of their little caravan into more spacious temporary premises.
Investigations continue into the arson attack on the original facility, which forced the staff to work in confined conditions far longer than should have been necessary…

Barry Smith aces the fourth!
After five club championships, seven years as club captain, innumerable pennants appearances and life membership, Barry Smith accomplished the last challenge left to him in a storied golfing career, by scoring a hole-in-one on Wednesday 3 June.
In a rare break in the wet weather, Barry let loose with a seven iron at the 137-metre par 3 Fourth hole, sending the ball soaring uphill with a magnificent baby draw.
The ball disappeared from view as it landed softly on the green, until a few minutes later when Barry arrived to retrieve it from the hole and claim his first ace in over half a century of competition golf.
Barry’s is the third hole-in-one at the course in less than a week, and the second at that same hole.
Congratulations to Barry, on a feat that was a long time coming and thoroughly deserved for that very reason.
Sunday 31 May - Public Course Pennants – Round 3
North Adelaide’s three sides were all at home: Division 1 against Mawson Lakes, while Divisions 2 and 3 hosted Seaford.
Division 1
A bumpy season just got bumpier for our top side, again losing a close one to Mawson Lakes 4.5 to 3.5.
At this level of pennants experience comes dearly, and so three straight losses in the opening matches was the price paid. The last four matches were hard-fought but Mawson Lakes had the edge despite wins to Yungbok Kim (3&2), Chantha Kong (1up), Peter Stolz (1up) and a squared match for Brett Murphy.
Division 2
Another solid win today has our Div 2 side undefeated at the halfway mark of the minor round. Four wins from the first five matches to Paul Jeong (1up), Pieter de Wit (3&2), Tom Ryke (4&2) and Luis Madriz (2&1) and a squared match to Steve Draper laid a firm foundation. Two close losses kept the door ajar for the visitors, until Kelly Kim (2&1) playing at number 1, slammed it shut in the final match. The final score 5.5 to 2.5.
Division 3
The two top teams of the Southern Division met over 13 holes, and it was North Adelaide in a canter 7-1 as the selectors rotated the squad to ensure as many got their 3-game qualifying requirement as possible. It was one way traffic as Brett Heaven (4&3), Robert Berg (2&1), Threetip Wongsala (1up), Darryl Treasure (3&2), Jason Yap (4&2), Lita Nam (1up) and Brian Roberts (2up) allowed North Adelaide to edge past Seacliff at the top of the table by a point, thanks to two wins and a halved round.
No games next week due to the long weekend.

O’Connor’s Saturday ace.
A day to remember for Committeeman, John O'Connor, who scored a hole-in-one in competition on Saturday 30 May.
John, who plays off 14, launched a wedge from 80 metres out to the par 3 third hole on the North Course, which hit the left of green, bounced right, and then rolled straight into the hole.
Congratulations to John on his first hole-in-one in more than 20 years of playing golf.
It's the second in club competition THIS WEEK after Tom Ryke’s ace on Thursday… and as mentioned prior, a sure sign that our members are getting their bearings on the tight and demanding layout.
