NEW CONTRIBUTOR: Ryan van Dijk
It was a pleasure to welcome Ryan van Dijk into my home recently. Ryan worked for the Adelaide 36ers in the 2000’s in the marketing division. He is a keen 36ers fan and we talked basketball for ages – the good, bad an the ugly of all things 36ers!

Ryan was astute enough to recover a horde of 36ers memorabilia ready to be dumped. He has been waiting for the appropriate moment to hand it on. It’s in good care now.

I look forward to posting Ryan’s contributions in the future.

Vale Dennis ‘Midge’ McGargill

The basketball community is deeply saddened by the passing of Dennis ‘Midge’ McGargill, one the Forestville Eagles foundation members.

Service to the Forestville Eagles Club:
In his younger years Midge was an accomplished tennis player but he soon transferred these skills to the basketball court. He was a member of Mellor Park Tennis Club which became the West Torrens Eagles in the 1950’s.

Midge was ‘everywhere with the Eagles. He was a district player, he coached women, was the assistant coach for several of the Forestville men’s teams (including that historic 1974 premiership team), plus junior coach and secretary for the club. Such was his stature he was awarded life membership of the Eagles in 1958.

A Lifelong Learner in all Aspects of Basketball:
A quote from the ‘yellow sheets’ in the 1970’s said “Although most novice referees apparently know enough about the rules of basketball and fail to attend lecture series, there are other basketball identities who are still keen to learn. Dennis MeGargill, of the West Torrens Club, who has had in excess of twenty years' experience in senior basketball, attended the umpires' lecture last Sunday in company with Don Weimer, the new giant from the U.S.A. recruited by West Torrens.”

BSA Service and Recognition:
It was this keenness to learn and serve that led Midge to become a valued member of the District Basketball Association’s Tribunal. The tribunal dealt with all reported offences at senior level and usually consisted of Midge, Stan Wickham, Ralph Smyth and Geoff Matthews. Midge was awarded a BSA Participant Life Membership for administrative duties in 1993. RIP Dennis.

BASKETBALL PIONEER: Oli Resnais and the Rise of Latvian Basketball in SA:

Olgerts ‘Oli’ Resnais played for the Adelaide Latvian Society (ALS) from about 1948, soon after arriving in Adelaide from Europe. He quickly established himself as an excellent player and an important figure in South Australian basketball.
