Australian Hiker | 352 Introduction to the Heysen Trail
Itโs the 7th of July, 2026, and in a few weeksโ time Iโll be commencing my southbound journey on South Australiaโs Heysen Trail. This trail is Australiaโsโ longest dedicated hiking trail spanning approximately 1200km from Parachilna in the north, to Cape Jarvis on the coastline in the so...

On the 27th and 28th of June, the End2End Nifty 19s took on the challenging Sections 12 and 13 of the Heysen Trail, hiking from Mylor to Montacute in beautiful cool and dry winter weather.
Our incredible volunteer FoHT walk leadersโKristyn, Roz, Dean, Sharon and Meredithโguided 33 hikers on Saturday and 37 hikers on Sunday through a diverse and rewarding landscape.
The weekend featured long, challenging descents, steep climbs, national parks, conservation parks, picturesque towns, road walking, creek crossings and damp, shaded sections, all rewarded with spectacular views across the city.
It was a demanding but incredibly enjoyable weekend on the trail, with great company, stunning scenery and another memorable chapter in the End2End journey.

Recognising the connections, achievements & continuing service of First Nations people through the Countries we traverse on the Heysen Trail:
Ngarrindjeri/Ramindjeri, Kaurna, Peramangk, Ngadjuri, Nukunu & Adnymathanha.
Itโs National NAIDOC Week, a time for all Australians to celebrate, recognise and learn about the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This yearโs theme, 50 Years of Deadly, marks five decades of NAIDOC Week and honours the Elders, organisers, artists and communities who have built and sustained this powerful movement.
Here in South Australia, First Nations people have been caring for Country as park rangers for more than 40 years, as well as serving in a range of different roles across DEW.
From Australiaโs first Aboriginal Ranger Training Program on Adnyamathanha Country in 1983 to the First Nations rangers working across parks today, their knowledge, leadership and connection to Country continue to shape conservation across the state.
You can show your support by getting involved in NAIDOC Week activities across South Australia, and learn more about the history of First Nations park rangers in our Good Living blog.

Saturday 11th July: Dares Hill Summit Rd to Hallett 20km
The trail takes you past the historic Mount Bryan East School before you begin the climb up Mount Bryan, the highest point of the Mount Lofty Ranges. From the summit, youโll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Mid North before you descend through grazing and farming land towards Hallett, once a railhead for the local farming community.
Sunday 12th July: Hallett to North Booborowie 19 km
This section is an enjoyable, gently undulating walk mainly along rural back roads and road reserves, with seasonally changing hues of the surrounding farmland.

Section one: Port Rickaby to Port Milacowie (20km)
The varied trail will cover beaches and inland tracks that wind through coastal sand dunes and farmlands. Bring your camera, as the birdlife is a real treat. Weaving onto and out of the beach, experiencing a rock pool ecosystem. We will come across old wooden davit structures at the base of the cliff, which were once a part of a manual boat-winching system.
Section two: Port Milacowie to Point Turton (21.5 km)
Starting the day with a spectacular beach walk, complete with rock pools and birdlife, we go back in time when we arrive in Hardwick Bay, full of traditional holiday shacks. We continue our walk to Flaherty Beach, which earned acclaim in a 2021 TikTok video as โthe best beach youโve probably never heard ofโ.

Cold and fog doesn't deter The Friends trail maintenance volunteers. Dom H led a hardy team in the mid-north around Huppatz Hut. Tasked to remove old stiles and install a new one, as well as checking on markers and general conditions. Huge thanks to Dom, Allan, Colin, John & Rick. We also appreciate the local landholder enabling access.

Based in Hawker for their penultimate week of walking the Heysen Trail, End-2-End 15 were prepared for what was ahead. Changeable weather conditions, resheduled & challenging walks, carpooling, social activities, green vegetation, stunning scenery, flowing creeks & wet feet. All of these delivered & more as the Fearless Fifteen took everything in their stride to complete four adventurous hikes through the Flinders Ranges in the final year of their 6 year journey.

The Nurragi Conservation Reserve is along the former Sandigrove to Milang railway line, an offshoot of the Adelaide to Victor Harbor line, that operated between 1884 and 1970. It is now a nature corridor that reflects early railway history in the state and provides for a very pleasant walk. For the railway buffs, the trail terminates at the Heritage Milang Railway Yard and Museum, that will open shortly before we are due to arrive.

Walk up Kensington Road, Wattle Park to the lookout to see stunning views over the city to the coast. Follow a road reserve and suburban streets to Old Coach Road, then a brief downhill and a lot of uphill until we reach the point where Old Coach Road intersects the Heysen Trail at the top of Horsnell Gully CP. Plenty of bush scenery and likely to see koalas. We then follow the Heysen Trail for a short while within Horsnell Gully CP, before turning off onto the Rockdale Hill Track and walking mostly downhill to the Horsnell Gully CP car park. The next part is mostly uphill along suburban streets and gravel roads, before entering the Magill Stone Mine Reserve. A few more suburban streets and weโre back to the cars.

Did you know The Friends Trail volunteers do more than care for the marker posts, stiles and hike-in sites?
Our Trail volunteers are currently collaborating with Dept for Environment & Water, Ngadjuri representatives & Friends of Burra Parks to create a new park at Worlds End Gorge & Hopkins Creek that will eventually include an exciting reroute option for the Heysen Trail.
Wandering through catchments of native tussock grassland and mallee or along ridgelines that have existed for tens of thousands of years will add to the diversity found on the Heysen Trail.
You may not have time to volunteer but joining The Friends is a great way to show support for our ongoing activity along the Trail.

An enjoyable time was had recently on a Trail Starter in Sturt Gorge. FoHT members were incredibly lucky with the weatherโrain fell the day before and again the day after, but during our walk enjoyed beautiful blue skies and sunshine.
The recent rain added something special, with a lovely flow along the Sturt River. The group had plenty of fun crossing it, and rock scrambling, several times along the way!
It was wonderful to welcome some new members on their very first walkโgreat to have you join us! And the local kangaroos didnโt seem the least bit bothered by our group passing through their patch.
Walkers wrapped up the morning with a cuppa and a biscuit, finishing up nicely by lunchtime. Sturt Gorge - a great local natural treasure.
