What we do in the shadows shines in the light.

What would Batman do?
It sounds like a joke, but according to a 2016 study, asking yourself this question and adopting an alternate identity creates a psychological phenomenon known as the Batman Effect. When you step into a persona, it allows you to view yourself in the third person. This psychological distance naturally creates greater self-discipline, focus, and concerted effort.
This explains exactly why the fitness and self-improvement industries have such tight-knit followings. You are not just working out, you are adopting a persona. People do not just do Olympic lifting, they are Olympic lifters. People do not just run marathons, they are marathoners.
When you buy the equipment, wear the uniform, read the books, and hire the coach, you are effectively claiming ownership of a new identity. You are convincing your brain that you are that person, and because you see yourself as that persona, you perform better.
If you are struggling to stay consistent, stop trying to rely on willpower. Instead, step into an alter ego. Buy the shoes, put on the uniform, and ask yourself who you need to be right now.

Have you ever heard the phrase, You are a cactus in a rainforest? I recently finished the book Dopamine Nation, and this line perfectly captures a hard truth about human biology and our approach to fitness.
If we look at evolutionary biology, human beings are remarkably thermodynamically efficient. We are built to get the maximum physical output from a minimum amount of calories. Early humans were persistence hunters. We survived not through intense, aggressive sprinting, but by tracking animals at a moderate, consistent pace until the prey exhausted itself in the heat.
What does this evolutionary fact mean for your health and workout routine today?
It means that extreme workout intensity is not the answer to your fitness goals. Moderate, long term consistency is exactly what your body is built to handle. Furthermore, because our metabolism is so highly efficient at conserving energy, you cannot consume massive amounts of calories and expect to maintain a low body weight. It is just simple biology.
Stop fighting your evolutionary design. Trade the intense burnout phases for moderate consistency and realistic calorie management.

Build activity into your daily life to take small steps to big change. This is one of my clients that worked with me to build movement snacks into his day and he is getting more consistent activity in his day than he has since he was training for races years ago. Build small things that add up into your day.

My 6-Month Reading Wrap-Up
Over the last six months, I have been on a massive non-fiction kick, diving deep into psychology, personal growth, and understanding how our minds work. If you are looking for your next read, here is a quick summary of every book I have recently devoured.
Book 1 is Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. This classic explains how thinking of your mind as a machine can improve your self-image. You can program your mind to achieve success by focusing on positive goals.
Book 2 is The Burnout Generation by Anne Helen Petersen. This book explores millennial burnout, tracing our collective overwhelming feelings back to late capitalism, hustle culture, and parental conditioning.
Book 3 is The Steal Like an Artist Audio Trilogy by Austin Kleon. A compilation offering a blueprint for succeeding as an artist in the digital age. It teaches you how to embrace your influences and share your process.
Book 4 is The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter. A wake-up call arguing that our addiction to comfort negatively impacts our health. Deliberately leaving our comfort zones can foster resilience and personal growth.
Book 5 is Fatal Conveniences by Darin Olien. An eye-opening look at the hidden toxic chemicals in everyday products like deodorant and laundry detergent, providing simple, non-toxic alternatives.
Book 6 is Under Saturn’s Shadow by James Hollis. A profound Jungian dive into the condition of the male psyche, exploring the heavy psychological burdens inherited from historical expectations.
Book 7 is The Middle Passage by James Hollis. This book frames midlife as an opportunity to reshape our identities and step into our true, authentic selves for a more meaningful second adulthood.
Book 8 is The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel. This read emphasizes that financial success depends more on behavior management than sheer intelligence, explaining how emotions drive our financial decisions.
Book 9 is Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke. A fascinating look at our vulnerability to compulsive overconsumption. It explains the neuroscience behind the pleasure-pain balance and the power of moderation.

As many of you know, I typically rely on bodyweight bands and suspension trainers. I advocate this highly for most people, especially people first beginning. I also have pull-up bars in my doors and now in my Albania location I have parallel bars and my new sandbag kettle bell. Back in the day I actually started as a kettlebell person all the way back in 2004 I since have done many things, including powerlifting, martial arts, sandbag training, as well as landline, university style, lifting, and many other various things. As far as versatility for the money goes. I would say the kit I currently have is the absolute peak of efficiency, versatility, footprint, and cost as well as mobility. The number of years that I’ve been traveling, and I have acted as a digital nomad has made me particularly good at knowing how to create the best possible kit for busy people and for digital nomads like myself. I highly recommend having a door anchor, a pull-up bar, a suspension trainer, a set of heavy loop bands, a ball kit for myofascial work, and I would now add a sandbag kettlebell or a aqua bag. This is of course if you are semi permanent, like a month stay. If less than that, stick to the door anchor, ball kit, and bands. They are easy to manage and if you don’t check luggage like me it’s the best bang for your buck and space.

Get off your butt regularly

Just keep going. Even if you don’t feel like you are making progress. You are. Put one brick on top of the other. That’s how progress is made. Just keep going. Discipline is key, motivation is BS. Just keep going.
