"Don't judge a book by its cover."
And while that's true, your first impression or gut feeling is often your brain processing hundreds of tiny signals before you've consciously noticed them. Pay attention to how someone makes you feel, you'll thank yourself later!

"Do you know what a council estate is?"
May seem like a silly question, but most of my Dubai Teen students don't know the answer.
Leaving Dubai for university can be exciting...but it can also be a huge culture shock.
It's the first time they're surrounded by people who have grown up completely differently. Different values. Different life experiences. Different attitudes towards relationships, alcohol, parties, personal space, and risk.
Preparing for university isn't just about packing suitcases or choosing accommodation. It's about preparing for life.
Have you or your child experienced culture shock after leaving Dubai?
I'd love to hear your story below. 👇
"Let Them Fly" Podcast
21/07/2026
I'm surprised how many teen girls in Dubai have told me they have been followed here. I'm lucky to say I haven't experienced it in the UAE, however I can think of many times in the UK and abroad!
If you think you're being followed:
🚶♀️ Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, don't ignore it.
📍 Head somewhere busy. Shops, cafés, hotels or anywhere with lots of people are far safer than quiet streets.
📞 Call someone. Let them know exactly where you are.
🚫 Don't go home. You don't want someone knowing where you live.
🙋♀️ Ask for help. Walk into a business and tell a member of staff what's happening.
🗣️ Use your voice. If someone approaches you, be loud, confident and attract attention.
🚔 If you're in immediate danger, call the police.
The goal here isn't to fight, it's to stay safe, make smart decisions and get home.
Save this post, share it with another parent, and take five minutes to talk through this scenario with your teen today.
Because the best time to have the conversation is before they ever need it.
Discussing why setting boundaries can be hard for Dubai teens with Heather Harries Education Hub on the "Let them Fly" Podcast.
How do you set boundaries when you've never experienced the situations that require them?
Many young people in Dubai have grown up in an incredibly safe environment, but when they move abroad for university or start travelling independently, they'll meet people with different values, different intentions, and very different life experiences.
That's exactly why I created Go Prepared, an online workshop designed to help teens feel confident before they leave home.
