Coral restoration isn’t just about planting fragments - it’s about data-driven science!

While placing corals on artificial structures gives them a head start, tagging them is what turns gardening into active marine research. 📊🤿

Here is why tagging every coral fragment underwater is essential for effective reef restoration:

1. 📈 Track Growth Rates Over Time
Without tags, it’s almost impossible to tell individual fragments apart as they branch out. Numbered tags allow divers to measure the precise linear extension, volume, and growth rate of specific colonies month after month.

2. 🧬 Identify Thermal & Disease Resilient Genotypes
When bleaching events or disease outbreaks hit, not all corals react the same way. By tagging each fragment, we can trace back which specific parent colony it came from and identify “super corals” - genotypes that show natural tolerance to warmer waters or stressors.

3. 📝 Accurately Monitor Survival Rates
Success in reef restoration isn’t just about how many fragments you plant; it’s about how many survive to maturity. Individual IDs ensure clear, unbiased data on mortality vs. success across different depths, locations, and substrates.

4. 🔬 Turn Dive Operations into Citizen Science
Tagging creates a standardized system where scientists, conservation divers, and students can all visit the same site, record observations on tag #19, and contribute to a long-term, global database of coral health.
