Over the past few weeks, we’ve been sharing pieces of Master Bitta’s story.
As we looked through old photographs, newspaper clippings, and competition memories, one thing became clear: a legacy isn’t built in a single tournament or a single moment.
It’s built through years of dedication, thousands of hours on the mats, and the impact one person has on generations of students.
That legacy is what inspires Bitta BJJ Academy today.
The story continues.

In the 90s, Bitta was organizing jiu-jitsu competitions in Teresopolis, a mountain city in Rio de Janeiro state. The sport was still finding its footing outside the big centers.
Decades later, he opened his academy in Abu Dhabi. A different country and a different culture, but the same jiujitsu he learned from the people who built it.

Over a decade ago, two people talked about building something together one day.
One was Mozart. The other was his professor, Edward.
Today, that dream is real. Professor and student, side by side, building the next chapter of Bitta Academy’s legacy.

Jiu-Jitsu rewards consistency. Children don’t need to be the strongest or the fastest. They simply need to keep showing up and keep learning.
These students started as white belts over two years ago. Since then, they have moved through five belt promotions and are now at their 6th belt level: Yellow/White Belt.
Today, their Yellow/White Belts are a reflection of that journey.

In 1991, a photo of Bitta mid-throw at the Rio de Janeiro State Championship made it into Jornal da Cidade.
When he was on the mat, it was hard to go unnoticed.

Some journeys come full circle.
Every professor was once a student, and Gabriel’s journey began in Rio de Janeiro with Professor Mozart.
Sometimes growth means leaving home. Portugal became the place where Gabriel refined his skills, earned his blue and purple belts under Professor Elias Passos, trained at Alliance Lisbon, and began teaching beginners and children.
Now a brown belt, Gabriel joins Bitta BJJ Academy with the same energy, curiosity, and passion for teaching that have shaped his journey so far.
Years after his first class with Professor Mozart, they are back on the mats together. This time as part of the same team.
Welcome to Bitta, Professor Gabriel. 🥋

Some lessons take time. Some breakthroughs come from a single adjustment. The role of a professor is to meet each student where they are.
That’s how we build confidence.
