So what does “capped” mean?

When bees have finished processing honey and reduced its moisture to the right level, they seal each cell with a thin layer of white beeswax.

This is called capping.

A bee smoker is one of the most important tools every beekeeper should know how to use.

But surprisingly, many beginners either use it incorrectly or use the wrong type of fuel.

The purpose of a bee smoker is not to chase bees away.

Its job is to calm the colony during hive inspections.

When bees sense smoke, they instinctively prepare for the possibility of leaving the hive by filling themselves with honey.

At the same time, the smoke helps mask the alarm pheromones that bees release to warn each other of danger.

As a result, the colony becomes much easier to work with.

Using a smoker correctly is simple.

Light your smoker until it produces cool, white smoke.

Avoid hot smoke or flames.

Apply just two or three gentle puffs at the hive entrance.

Wait for a few seconds.

Then gently open the hive and apply a small amount of smoke over the top bars if necessary.

Less is often more.

Too much smoke only disturbs the bees.
