* # POGAWUZ ON IT AGAIN*
Questions are once again being raised about the role of Power Generation and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (POGAWUZ) in the workplace and its relationship with political activities.
According to concerns raised by some workers who are still a part of this union, POGAWUZ became particularly influential during the PF era and was perceived by some employees as having political connections. Critics allege that the union wielded significant influence within ZESCO and that some workers felt unable to freely express themselves or challenge union decisions.
Talks around are that between 2012 and 2016, lists containing names of workers earmarked for dismissal circulated within some union structures. And about that number of people were retired on National interests.
Following the change of government in 2021, workers who had previously lost their positions were reportedly reinstated following a presidential directive. The subsequent environment also allowed workers greater freedom to choose which unions they wished to join, resulting in significant changes in union membership.
More recently, talks have emerged that POGAWUZ leaders and some members became involved in supporting the NRPUP political project. Claims have also been made that contributions from the union through subscription funds and further they asked their loyal members within the union to contribute towards the NRPUP campaigns. This was said to be in exchange of promises of positions and other benefits were made in connection with a possible change of government.
In one of the union meetings, we witnessed the union president and Deputy General Treasurer handing a huge sum of money to NRPUP party representatives while in Ndola to help carry out a smooth campaign. At around 22hrs.
When the NRPUP presidential candidate announced that he won the election,The POGAWUZ NEC celebrated and handled in a list of about 500 workers to be retired on National Interest, across the country. Every Branch submitted a list to the union president and NEC officials. We thank God the UPND government won.
, We challenge the individuals involved.Which are POGAWUZ President Boyd Kapeswa and Deputy General Treasurer Humphrey Mutale including his national executive committee to deem these facts .As it has come out to the public eye with what is happening.
The bigger issue is the independence of workers' unions. A union should primarily represent workers, protect their rights and improve their conditions of service—not become an extension of a political party.
We wish to appeal to The Ministry of Labour and other relevant authorities to take kine interest in the dirt operation of such a union. This is not the first time they are doing these operation, they did it before and they are still doing it as they are working with the opposition to frustrate the work of the UPND Government.
