Sekuru' Comes Home: Martin Muchena Named 1st Assistant Coach of Senior Men’s Team

Bulawayo — After years of service abroad, Martin "Sekuru" Muchena has finally been recognized in his country of origin with his appointment as 1st Assistant Coach of the Senior Men’s National Basketball Team.

Muchena, affectionately known as "Sekuru" — meaning uncle or grandfather in English — has been a respected figure in the region for his coaching work, particularly in his adopted home of Lusaka, Zambia. There, he both played and cut his teeth as a coach, building a reputation for discipline, mentorship and player development.

His latest appointment forms part of the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe’s technical staff announcements for the 2026-2027 FIBA cycle, where he will serve under newly appointed Head Coach Eric "Tamanda" Banda.

Muchena hails from Mabvuku in Harare, where he also played at the highest level. He featured for Roderick Takawira’s highly successful Cameo side, a team that produced some of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated players and coaches.

That grounding in Zimbabwean basketball, combined with his years of experience in Zambia, now brings a valuable blend of local roots and regional exposure to the national team bench.

The move is being viewed as a homecoming and long-overdue appreciation for a coach who has quietly done remarkable work outside the country’s borders.

Muchena joins a technical team that also includes Kelvin Ben as 2nd Assistant Coach and Tafara Chirambira as Team Manager, as Zimbabwe prepares for upcoming FIBA assignments.

BUZ has called on players, clubs, administrators, sponsors, media and fans to throw their weight behind the new technical teams as preparations begin.
The union emphasized that building a competitive national team will require collective effort, urging stakeholders to offer encouragement, understanding, and support as the coaches and players work toward upcoming FIBA assignments.

With "Sekuru" back on home soil in a national role, Zimbabwe basketball gains not just experience, but a familiar voice who understands the culture of the game both locally and across the region.
