The Knysna Extreme isn’t an event you just decide to do overnight. It takes months of preparation, planning and commitment.

If it’s on your calendar for this year, now is the time to secure your place. Early Bird entries close on 31 July 2026 after which standard entry pricing will come into effect.

With only 100 individual entries and 10 team entries available, this is the one event where planning ahead really matters.

The world record wasn't just broken...
It was broken three times.

Most races have a finish line but not the Backyard Ultra

Every hour, runners set off on a 6.706km loop. Finish within the hour and you earn the right to start again. Miss the cut-off, and your race is over. The last runner still completing a lap wins.

Earlier this year, the Backyard Ultra world record was rewritten in spectacular fashion. Russia's Dmitry Klimov completed 123 laps, covering an incredible 824.8km over five consecutive days. Even more remarkable, two other runners also went beyond the previous world record in the same race.

That's what makes this format so unique. You're not racing the clock or the course. You're racing your own body, your own mind and the runner standing next to you.
