Myofascial release
Myofascial release is not simply about applying pressure. To create change, we often need to work into areas of tension with firm, focused pressure. There can be a level of discomfort or intensity as we work into restricted or overactive tissue, but it should remain controlled and manageable.
The aim is to create enough stimulation for the body to respond, rather than simply brushing over the surface. Through sustained pressure, slow movement and mindful breathing, we give the tissues and nervous system time to respond and adapt.
For me, one of the most important parts of myofascial release is learning the difference between therapeutic discomfort and pain that is telling us to stop. A focused pressure point can be held for around 10 seconds, followed by a slow release and reassessment.
We are looking for that moment when the tissue begins to soften, resistance decreases, breathing changes or movement feels easier. It is not about avoiding intensity; it is about using the right amount of pressure, in the right direction, for the right amount of time.
Myofascial release is about listening to the body, working with it and allowing it to respond.

Contrology: Wasn't Pilates Originally Strength Training?
Absolutely. Pilates is strength training just not in the way most people think.
When Joseph Pilates created Contrology, he aimed to build strong, capable bodies through controlled movement and resistance. Rather than focusing on bigger muscles or heavier weights, it develops strength, coordination, balance, posture, and body awareness.
Traditional strength training often uses increasing loads to build muscle and maximal strength. Pilates takes a different approach, using resistance, stability, control, and precise movement to challenge the body.
A heavy squat and a challenging Reformer exercise are both forms of resistance training they simply develop different qualities of strength.
So the question isn't whether Pilates is strength training it is.
The better question is: what kind of strength are we measuring?
Pilates builds strength, endurance, control, stability, and movement efficiency, while traditional weightlifting is often better for maximizing muscle size and absolute strength.
Joseph Pilates wasn't creating a replacement for strength training. He was creating a complete movement system designed to make the body work as one connected unit.
The goal wasn't just stronger muscles.
The goal was a stronger human being.

I can’t quite put into words how special this first month at Die Studio has been… but these moments say it all.
So much laughter, so much energy, and so many strong, beautiful bodies showing up and giving their all. From wobbly first movements to confident flow. Watching each of you grow has been the biggest privilege.
This space has already become more than just a studio… it’s a place to move, to connect, to breathe, and yes, to have a little fun along the way 🤍
Thank you to every single person who has walked through these doors and trusted me with your movement journey. This is just the beginning.

First Ray Mechanics: The Key to Foot Stability & Propulsion
This image highlights the first ray (medial column of the foot)—a critical structure consisting of the first metatarsal, medial cuneiform, and their supporting soft tissues. It plays a central role in maintaining arch integrity and enabling efficient gait.
The upper illustration shows the load-bearing axis of the foot, where forces travel from the heel through the midfoot and into the forefoot. The first ray acts as a primary stabilizing pillar, especially during push-off.
The lower image emphasizes the first metatarsal and its alignment, which directly influences how force is transmitted through the big toe. This region is essential for creating a rigid lever during the terminal stance phase of gait.
Biomechanically, the first ray must be both mobile and stable. During early stance, it allows slight dorsiflexion to adapt to the ground. As the body moves forward, it plantarflexes, helping to lock the medial arch and provide a solid base for propulsion.
A key concept here is the windlass mechanism. When the big toe extends, the plantar fascia tightens, elevating the arch and enhancing foot rigidity. This transforms the foot from a flexible shock absorber into a powerful lever for push-off.
If the first ray is unstable or elevated, it can lead to poor load distribution, causing excessive pressure on the lateral foot or lesser toes. This is commonly associated with conditions like hallux valgus, plantar fasciitis, and inefficient gait patterns.
